2007 Toyota Yaris Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear shock absorber on 2007 Toyota Yaris?
A: The repair process of the rear shock absorber starts with wheel removal then continues with removal of the rear seat cushion cover pad sub-assembly and rear seatback assembly for Sedan Fixed Seat Type models. The service procedure starts with Hatchback rear absorber cap removal while continuing with the process of removing the rear shock absorber cap, shock absorber, and support of the axle beam with a jack and wooden block placement between jack and rear axle spring seat for protection. You must first remove the two suspension nuts which should not let the piston rod rotate and then dismount both the cushion retainer and suspension support before removing the bolt while securing the bolt nut from spinning. If you use a jam nut set-up the nut on the bolt end needs to be removed. Begin the procedure by taking away the rear suspension support stopper followed by the rear suspension support assembly. To evaluate the rear shock absorber's condition extend and compress the rod while listening for sounds and checking for unusual resistance; a new shock absorber must be installed in case of any abnormality. First install the rear suspension support assembly with stopper then secure the shock absorber temporarily by using the bolt and nut combination when supporting the axle beam at its proper position. Start by placing the new suspension support under the cushion retainer. Secure the piston rod to install a 15 to 18 mm (0.591 to 0.709 inches) tight lower nut followed by installation of a new upper nut until it reaches a torque of 25 N m (250 kgf cm, 18 ft. lbf). The service concludes with Hatchback model rear shock absorber cap and rear absorber cap installation followed by Sedan Fixed Seat Type rear seatback assembly and rear seat cushion cover pad sub-assembly before applying 103 N m (1,050 kgf cm, 76 ft. lbf) torque to the rear wheel. Complete suspension stabilization starts with jack removal and multiple suspension bouncing until you need to fully tighten the shock absorber bolt to 49 N m (500 kgf cm, 36 ft. lbf) while inspecting the rear wheel alignment. A drill with shop rag protection should discharge gas from the shock absorber piston rod after fully extending the rod by drilling a hole in the designated area as the gas emits no odor or color and remains harmless.
