2007 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear axle shaft assembly on 2007 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Toward a safe repair of the rear axle shaft assembly begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable and wheel removal along with draining braking fluid before removing the sub-assembly of brake drums. The first step of the assembly repair starts with removing brake shoes from both front and rear brakes and taking off the rear speed sensor and subsequent separation of the parking brake cable assembly through the removal of its two backing plate bolts. Using SST 09023-00101 and a container you must disconnect the rear brake tube but catch brake fluid in the container. The rear axle shaft with backing plate needs four nuts and O-ring removal to extract the rear axle shaft oil seal with SST 09308-00010. A press equipped with SST 09521-25011 and 09521-25021 must be used for removing a rear axle shaft snap ring. A snap ring expander serves first for this purpose. By first removing the rear axle shaft washers and rear axle bearing retainer inner component the technician should install four new nuts to secure the rear axle housing bolts before striking them out with a hammer to remove both the axle bearing and bolts while maintaining the reused nuts. Tool SST 09650-17011 should be used to remove the hub bolts in both 2WD models and the hybrid Pre-Runner configuration with six hub bolts. Chisel out the chipped area of the rear axle bearing inner race surface and then remove its oil seal from the rear axle shaft. A dial indicator is used to measure the shaft and flange runout on the rear axle shaft and the measurements must not exceed 1.5 mm for the shaft along with 0.05 mm for the flange. The components must be replaced if any damage or wear is observed. When assembling the components begin by installing the rear axle shaft with a new deflector gasket on top of the deflector followed by hub bolts and finishing with hub nut tightening. Install the 4 parking brake plates to the backing plate that rests on the rear axle bearing while using two socket wrenches and a press. Position the rear axle shaft plate washer and a fresh rear axle bearing retainer inner onto the rear axle shaft through the use of SST 09521-25011. Set up a new snap ring with the assistance of a snap ring expander. When installing use SST along with a hammer for a new oil seal before fitting the rear axle shaft with backing plate using 4 nuts that should be tightened to 36 Nm. Follow this procedure to fasten SST 09023-00101 on the rear brake tube by torquing it to 15 Nm then secure the parking brake cable assembly with 2 bolts that reach 8.0 Nm torque. Fasten the rear speed sensor then apply high-temperature grease before mounting the rear brake shoes followed by the front brake shoes. Placement of rear drum brake components requires a necessary inspection followed by rear brake drum sub-assembly installation and subsequent adjustment of the rear drum brake shoe clearance. In order to finalize rear wheel assembly and brake system installation connect the cable to the negative battery terminal using 3.9 Nm torque. Then fill the reservoir with fluid and bleed the master cylinder and brake lines if needed while inspecting for leakage and checking fluid levels and parking brake system adjustment. Also test VSC and ABS sensor signals during this process.
