2007 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2007 Toyota Camry?
A: The power steering pump repair begins with draining the fluid then removing the front wheel RH, engine under cover RH, front fender apron seal RH, fan and generator V belt followed by disconnecting the No. 1 fluid reservoir to pump hose by sliding the clip. The service begins with disconnecting the pressure feed tube assembly through removal of the union bolt and gasket and separation of the power steering fluid pressure switch connector. The vane pump assembly disassembly requires Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to loosen 2 bolts before their removal. To disassemble the vane pump assembly insert it into a vise using Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132) while you remove the power steering suction port union and its O-ring as well as the power steering fluid pressure switch and the flow control valve assembly with compression spring. Beginning with the vane pump rear housing bolts' removal and O-ring removal, continue by separating the vane pump shaft with pulley using its snap ring until the vane pump rotor and cam ring are reachable followed by the front side plate O-ring extraction. You should extract the vane pump housing oil seal through a combination of screwdriver and cloth tooling. The vane pump shaft and bushing need oil clearance inspection with a maximum value of 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch), while the rotor and plate clearance should remain below 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch). Check the flow control valve assembly for its smooth working condition and leakage states and measure the free compression spring length which must exceed 29.2 mm (1.150 inch) during examination. All components of the vane pump assembly must be replaced when they show damage or end up out of standard specifications. You must coat all parts with power steering fluid before you use Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09951-07100 to install the new vane pump housing oil seal before placing the vane pump shaft with pulley inside and properly installing the front side plate, cam ring and rotor and plates. First, torque the snap ring alongside the rear housing with its O-ring to 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Then, add the flow control valve assembly and pressure port union and torque them to 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) and 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Secure the vane pump assembly by torquing bolts to 43 Nm (439 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) without special tool or to 29 Nm (294 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.) with its use while correctly applying torque with the wrench. The mechanic proceeds with reattaching the power steering fluid pressure switch connector followed by securing the pressure feed tube assembly that requires a new gasket while connecting it to the No. 1 fluid reservoir pump hose. After reinstalling the fan and generator V belt users should perform power steering fluid addition then system bleeding followed by checking for fluid leaks and replacing the front fender apron seal RH, engine under cover RH and front wheel RH before torquing the wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.).
