2007 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH on 2007 Toyota Avalon?
A: As a first step for PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH repair service start by removing the battery and air cleaner assembly followed by transmission control cable assembly separation which includes the control shaft lever nut removal then cable disconnection from the lever and bracket clip removal while avoiding contact with the resin guide pipe. The switch service requires you to first disconnect its connector before taking out the nut and washer and control shaft lever. A screwdriver must then pry up the lock plate to remove the lock nut and lock plate which allows extraction of the switch. The examiner applies the parking brake and turns the ignition key to ON to verify the engine operates only in N or P positions and the Back Up light and reverse warning will activate at R position. If any issues are detected, continuity must be checked. To inspect resistance of the switch component workers must jack up the vehicle then disconnect the connector and perform specified resistance measurements. The adjustment process starts by loosening the two bolts on the shift lever while placing it in N position and aligning the groove with neutral basic line before tightening these bolts to 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf). The operation inspection needs to be redone after carrying out the adjustment procedures. To install the switch users must first affix it to the manual valve shaft before temporarily installing the bolts while adding a new lock plate and securing the nut to 6.9 N m (70 kgf cm, 61 in. lbf). Start by placing the temporarily installed control shaft lever counterclockwise until it stops rotating and then turn it clockwise by two notches before removing the lever to position the groove correctly while securing the switch bolts at 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf). After bending the lock plate tabs position the control shaft lever and washer along with the nut that needs a torque of 13 N m (130 kgf cm, 9 ft. lbf) before joining the switch connector. The transmission control cable assembly needs installation of a new clip into the bracket after attaining a 13 N m (133 kgf cm, 10 ft. lbf) nut torque between the control cable and its attached lever. Complete the park/neutral position switch assembly adjustment before inspecting its operation while checking the shift lever position potentially needing adjustment if required and reinstall the air cleaner assembly and reconnect the battery. Some systems need system initialization when the negative battery terminal is removed.
