2006 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ASSEMBLY (ATM) on 2006 Toyota Avalon?
A: The first step to replace the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (ATM) involves disconnecting the negative battery cable. First remove the air cleaner assembly followed by air cleaner hose No.1 and intake air resonator sub-assembly and engine under cover LH. The park/neutral position switch assembly becomes accessible after removing its components starting with the nut followed by the washer and control shaft lever and ending with prying up the lock plate and taking out the lock nut and plate before removing the two bolts to extract the switch. To install the park/neutral position switch mount it to the manual valve shaft while placing two bolts for temporary fastening. Utilize a new lock plate before tightening the nut to 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). The control shaft lever must be temporarily installed before turning it counterclockwise to its stopping point then clockwise for two notches while making the lever removal. Tighten the two bolts at 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) with the groove positioned at the neutral basic line while maintaining switch position. Apply a screwdriver to stake the nut before adding the control shaft lever and washer along with the nut and torquing it to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft lbs.). After reattaching the engine under cover LH and the intake air resonator sub-assembly along with air cleaner hose No.1 and air cleaner assembly reconnect the park/neutral position switch connector. Lastly, reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal. Perform an adjustment and inspection of the shift lever position together with the park/neutral position switch assembly before performing any initialization that systems will need after disconnecting from the negative battery terminal.
