2006 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2006 Toyota Avalon?
A: The first step to substitute the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring includes safety precautions for Air Bags along with disconnecting the negative battery terminal followed by a 90-second wait to stop Air Bag activation. First position the front wheels into the straight-ahead position then proceed to remove steering wheel cover lower No.3 and lower No.2 along with the horn button assembly and steering wheel assembly with Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). After detaching the steering column cover lower and upper researchers need to disconnect the clock spring sub-assembly by removing its connectors while unwinding the three claws but ensuring the Air Bag wire harness remains undamaged. Clock spring sub-assembly inspection must be conducted for signs of cracks and scratches then replacement becomes necessary. Put the steering sensor and the new clock spring sub-assembly in place yet maintain the steering wheel straightness while the turn signal switch stays at neutral position by unlocking the pin before the steering wheel assembly goes in. Clock spring sub-assembly connector installation precedes putting on the steering column cover lower and upper portions. Perform the clock spring sub-assembly adjustment step after disabling the ignition switch and disconnecting the battery negative terminal. Then turn the sub-assembly counterclockwise until it becomes stiff then continue by turning it clockwise approximately 2.5 times to match the marks. The horn button assembly should be installed first followed by both steering wheel covers once the steering wheel assembly installation is complete and the steering wheel center point inspection is performed. Check the horn button assembly after returning the negative battery terminal back to its place and inspecting the horn function. To initialize the Front Power Seat Control System you must perform full seat adjustments of forward position and backward position and adjust seatback and headrest accordingly whenever the battery is disconnected or you replace the D/C CUT fuse or the power seat switch or power seat assembly has been taken out. Check the status of the SRS warning light as the last step.
