2006 Toyota Tundra Starter Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair a 2.0 Kw starter motor on 2006 Toyota Tundra?
A: Starting repairs on the 2.0 Kw starter motor requires first disconnecting the lead wire from the C terminal followed by removal of the 2 through bolts allowing you to pull out the starter yoke along with the armature while removing the O-ring from the starter yoke assembly. Extract the steel ball from the clutch shaft hole by using a magnetic finger after you have removed the magnet starter switch assembly and its 2 screws and switch. To perform starter brush holder assembly maintenance you should first remove 2 screws and an end cover from the starter yoke before extracting the O-ring and using a screwdriver to hold the spring back while moving the 4 brushes from their holder then remove the brush holder from the armature. The armature inspection includes verifying the commutator open circuit continuity with an ohmmeter and searching for ground issues between the commutator and the armature coil core while cleaning burnt surfaces with sandpaper (up to No.400) or a lathe for optimal results and checking the circle runout with a dial indicator (not exceeding 0.05 mm) and measuring commutator diameter with vernier calipers (standard size 35.0 mm with a minimum of 34.0 mm). The evaluation must check brush undercut depth both for cleanliness and smoothness while measuring brush length and verifying brush holder insulation continuity (standard 0.7 mm minimum 0.2 mm) and brush spring load range (21.5 to 27.5 N minimum 12.7 N). An ohmmeter should show circuit continuity from the lead wire to field coil brush lead and from field coil end to field frame during an inspection. Resistance testing should be done between shunt coil terminals (A) and (B) which should measure at 1.5 to 1.9 Ohms at 20 degrees Celsius. Free rotation of the clutch pinion gear and proper locking performance should be checked while inspecting the magnet starter switch to verify that the switch shows continuity between terminal 50 and C and between terminal 50 and the switch body. The assembly process includes placing the brush holder assembly with applied grease on its bearings followed by positioning the brush holder on the armature then installing the brushes before adding a new O-ring to the field frame groove before tightening 2 screws to 3.8 N.m. Mount the magnet starter switch assembly by placing a steel ball that has been lubricated into the clutch shaft hole followed by lubricating the essential parts before tightening the switch with two screws (torque 9.3 N.m). Place the starter yoke assembly with an updated O-ring after aligning its key stem with the magnet starter switch slot then fasten both components with two through bolts (torque 9.3 N.m) while connecting the lead wire to the C terminal with a nut tightened to 5.9 N.m.
