Starter

1. Remove the engine rear under cover assembly by taking out 4 bolts. 2. Remove the No.2 manifold stay by unscrewing 3 bolts. 3. Disconnect the wire harness from the cylinder block by removing the bolt. 4. Remove the starter assembly by disconnecting the terminal 50 connector, removing the nut from terminal 30, and unscrewing 2 bolts.

Check for open circuit continuity between terminals 50 and C.

Install an O-ring to the groove of the starter yoke, then attach 2 new O-rings and the end cover with 2 screws, torqued to 3.8 Nm (39 kgf-cm, 34 in-lbf).

Disconnect the starter connector, remove the nut and disconnect the starter cable.

1. After disconnecting the negative battery terminal, remove the engine rear under cover assembly in the same manner as 2WD. 2. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (bank 2) connector. 3. Remove 2 bolts, 2 nuts, the No. 2 front exhaust pipe assembly, and 2 gaskets. 4. Remove the front fender rear splash shield LH by taking out 5 clips. 5. Loosen bolt A and remove bolt B to separate the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly. 6. Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly. 7. Remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30. 8. Remove the 2 bolts to take out the starter assembly.

Inspect it for open circuits using an ohmmeter to check continuity between the commutator segments; if there is no continuity, replace the armature.

Unscrew the 2 screws and end cover, take out the O-ring, hold the spring back with a screwdriver to disconnect the 4 brushes from the brush holder, and remove the brush holder from the armature.

Apply grease to the return spring before inserting it into the clutch shaft hole.

Use Special Service Tool: 09286-46011 to remove the bearing and press in a new one.

Install the air switching valve assembly, air pump assembly with bracket, and rear water by-pass joint with 2 new gaskets, tightening the 4 nuts to 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf).

Use Special Service Tool: 09286-46011 for removal, then use Special Service Tool: 09820-00031 and a press to install a new bearing.

Attach the engine wire protector to the starter using the bolt, ensuring a torque of 9.81 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 84 in.lbf).

Remove the nut.

Remove the starter armature from the starter yoke.

Take out the 2 bolts securing it to the cylinder block, disconnect the starter from the cylinder block, disconnect the starter connector, remove the nut and bolt to disconnect the starter wire, and finally remove the bolt to disconnect the engine wire protector from the starter.

Connect the starter wire with the nut at the same torque of 9.81 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 84 in.lbf).

Remove the engine under cover and disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

Reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal, noting that some systems may require initialization after reconnection.

Use a screwdriver to hold the spring back and disconnect the brush, removing the 4 brushes and the brush holder while checking that the positive (+) lead wires are not grounded.

Remove the two bolts securing it to the cylinder block, disconnect it from the block, and then remove the bolt to disconnect the engine wire protector.

First, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.

Connect the wire harness to terminal 30 and install the nut, torquing it to 9.8 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf), then connect terminal 50 to the starter.

Connect the starter wire with the nut at the same torque of 9.81 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 84 in.lbf).

Remove the starter assembly.

Remove the starter armature assembly from the starter yoke.
