2006 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the front brake caliper on 2006 Toyota Tundra?
A: A screwdriver enables removal of front brake caliper service and repair items which include 4 cylinder boot set rings and boots. A wooden plate should be prepared to support the pistons while the pistons rest on one side of the setup with a pad installed. Compressed air must be used to move the pistons into the cylinder. Maintain fingers outside the pistons at all times. The process begins with extracting the 4 piston seals from the cylinder by using a screwdriver. Use a ruler to check pad lining thickness during inspection because the standard measure is 11.5 mm (0.453 inch) and the minimum limit is 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Obtaining replacement pads becomes necessary when actual measurements fall below minimum requirements or exhibit uneven wear. To measure disc thickness use a micrometer with acceptable range between 28.0 mm (1.102 inch) standard and 26.0 mm (1.024 inch) minimum; the disc requires replacement if results match or exceed the minimum level. The disc runout must be measured at a point 10 mm (0.39 inch) from the outside edge using a dial indicator and should not exceed 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). Disc replacement is required if runout measurements exceed the maximum value while front hub bearing specifications must be within limits before runout measurement. The disc runout requires an adjustment by securing hub nuts to 113 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.) torque while disc installation at a 1/6 turn rotated away from initial position. Continue running runout tests until minimum measurements become less significant than maximum but raise the minimum to the maximum. Disc replacement is needed if this process fails. Reinsertion occurs in a reverse order of part removal meaning the application of lithium soap base glycol grease and disc brake grease happens on specific components.
