2006 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Rack And Pinion on 2006 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The procedure to fix the power steering link begins with disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal then positioning the front wheels straight ahead before removing the front wheels. Separate the steering sliding yoke from steering intermediate shaft No. 2 by using a seat belt to lock the wheel from rotation and marking both components for alignment followed by bolt removal A and B. Following that lower the steering sliding yoke to mark steering intermediate shaft No. 2 together with the power steering link then unbolt C to free the intermediate shaft No. 2 from the power steering link. The tie rod end sub-assembly separation begins when technicians remove both sides of cotter pins and nuts and proceed with Special Service Tool: 09610-20012 to remove tie rod ends from the steering knuckle arms. The power steering pressure feed tube assembly can be removed using Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 by loosening the flare nut to disconnect the return hose. Remove the power steering link by removing its two bolts and two nuts only while turning the bolts exclusively. To separate the rack and pinion outlet return tube from the disassembly process apply Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 and the steering turn pressure tube and O-rings require Special Service Tool: 09023-38401. Secure the power steering link in a vise using Special Service Tool: 09612-00012 and proceed to remove the tie rod end sub-assembly while also unclipping the steering rack boot clips and clamps without damaging the boots. Use tool 09922-10010s to unstake the claw washer and remove the steering rack end sub-assembly before taking out the rack and pinion rack guide and power steering control valve assembly by winding vinyl tape against the serrated part of the control valve to prevent damage. Disassembly requires removal of the power steering rack along with its bush when users utilize Special Service Tools: 09527-21011 and 09612-24014 to extract the rack bush oil seal. The procedure begins by removing the control valve upper oil seal followed by the cylinder end stopper. Check the torque of the tie rod end sub-assembly followed by a power steering rack runout and wear inspection. Reassembly starts with power steering fluid coating of parts followed by correct installation of the rack steering piston ring and cylinder tube oil seal using Special Service Tools. Then the power steering rack and bush installation takes place. A tightness test should be performed first before the power steering control valve receives its upper oil seal and assembly installation and adjustment of total preload using Special Service Tool: 09631-10021. After complete assembly of the rack and pinion end sub-assembly you must apply appropriate torque values to tie rod ends, pressure feed tube assembly, and power steering link components before reinstalling front wheels, reinstalling the negative battery terminal and adding power steering fluid followed by bleeding the system and checking for leaks before inspecting wheel alignment.
