2007 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Rack And Pinion on 2007 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The power steering link requires service by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal followed by facing the front wheels straight ahead before removing the front wheels. Before removing rack and pinion intermediate shaft No. 2, install a seat belt on the steering wheel to hold it in position, mark the steering components for reference then take out bolts A and B to detach the steering sliding yoke from the intermediate shaft. The procedure starts with pulling down the steering sliding yoke to mark the power steering link and rack and pinion intermediate shaft No. 2 and then removing bolt C before sliding the intermediate shaft No. 2 to detach from the link. The LH tie rod end sub-assembly needs separation through nut and cotter pin removal followed by tool usage of SST 09610-20012 to detach it from the steering knuckle arm and repeating this same process on the RH side. The pressure feed tube assembly requires the bolt's removal to detach the tube support bracket while SST 09023-12701 will help loosen the flare nut for pressure feed tube disconnect and then disconnect the return hose through clip disengagement. Unfasten the power steering link by removing its 2 bolts and 2 nuts and only rotate the bolts because the nuts contain detents. The disassembly requires SST 09023-12701 to detach both the rack and pinion outlet return tube and SST 09023-38401 to remove the 2 pressure tubes and further remove the O-rings. Place the power steering link into SST 09612-00012 as the vise fixture without exceeding normal torque limits. Withdraw the tie rod end sub-assemblies from both left and right positions followed by an appropriate disassembly of the steering rack boot components to protect them from damage. The procedure requires use of SST 09922-10010 to remove steering rack ends as well as unstake claw washers and separate rack and pinion rack guide with SST 09922-10010 and SST 09631-10021. The extraction of the power steering control valve assembly can be accomplished by winding vinyl tape around its serrated portion, removing the dust cover and bolts along with the O-ring, and then performing a careful removal of the control valve. Remove the upper oil seal with SST 09950-60010 (09951-00250) as well as SST 09950-70010 (09951-07150). Complete the process by extracting the cylinder end stopper. First remove the power steering rack and bush while using SST 09527-21011 and 09612-24014 as well as 09613-22011. Extract these components by using SST 09527-21011 for the O-ring and SST 09612-24014, or SST 09613-22011 for the oil seal. Check the torque readings on ball joint stud along with inspecting the subassembly while flipping the tie rod end. Runout and wear checks on the rack and pinion should be performed. If the rack shows sign of deterioration it must be replaced. Reassemble the system while applying power steering fluid to parts and install the rack steering piston ring together with the cylinder tube oil seal with SST 09950-60010 (09951-00250, 09951-00440, 09952-06010) and SST 09950-70010 (09951-07360) before adding the rack and pinion through SST 09631-33010. The next step involves installing the rack bush together with the cylinder end stopper until you perform an air tightness examination. Place the power steering control valve upper oil seal and assembly while applying power steering fluid to the control valve rings before sliding SST 09631-20081 carefully over them. SST 09631-10021 allows the installation of the rack and pinion rack guide while total preload adjustment demands SST 09631-10021 and requires the application of sealant to the rack guide spring cap. Insert the rack end sub-assembly while complying with set torque values before installing rack boots with clamps followed by tie rod ends and pressure tube assembly and power steering link components which must be torqued correctly. The procedure includes positioning front wheel installations followed by checking steering wheel center alignment before terminal battery detachment and reboot. Then pour power steering fluid while bleeding the system and leak detection and wheel alignment assessment becomes necessary.
