2007 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2007 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The power steering pump repair process starts with disconnecting the battery negative cable before removing engine under cover sub-assembly No. 1 (4WD and Pre-Runner) and removing both fan and generator V belts. The first step requires fluid drainage followed by cutting the pressure feed tube assembly from its connection by releasing the clip and unfastening the return hose while removing the union bolt and gasket. The vane pump removal requires disconnecting the oil pressure switch connector along with two bolt removal. Follow the instructions for fixing the vane pump assembly within a vise clamp using SST 09630-00014 (09631-00132) while avoiding excessive tightening. The vane pump oil reservoir sub-assembly can be removed by detaching three bolts and an O-ring. First disconnect the flow control valve by removing the pressure port union and then extract both the valve and compression spring. You should pull out the power steering oil pressure switch while being cautious to not hurt the part and remove the four bolts and O-ring on the vane pump housing rear. You should remove the pulley shaft sub-assembly by first removing the snap ring and then the pulley shaft before taking away the vane pump rotor and the ten vane plates from their positions. Take out the vane pump cam ring and the vane pump side plate front together with their O-rings. The extraction of vane pump housing oil seal requires careful use of a screwdriver while maintaining the safety of the vane pump housing front. A micrometer and caliper gauge should be used to check oil clearance and verify its compliance with standard specifications. Keep critical measurements to evaluate vane pump rotor and plate size along with maximum spacing values. Check that the flow control valve moves without resistance and examines for leaks while assessing the length of the compression spring. The entire vane pump assembly needs replacement if any of its components fail to meet specifications. Secure the specified parts to assembly with power steering fluid before installing the new vane pump housing oil seal using SST 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and placing it facing the correct direction. Place the pulley shaft sub-assembly with extreme caution to prevent damaging the oil seal lip. Position the vane pump side plate front together with its cam ring by ensuring both components keep proper alignment. Secure the vane pump rotor by attaching it with a newly installed snap ring while its inscribed mark faces outward. Complete installation by applying power steering fluid on the vane plates. Secure the vane pump housing rear by fitting a new O-ring properly while tightening it to 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Test smooth rotation of the vane pump preload while installing the service bolt according to a torque of 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.). Follow installation of the power steering oil pressure switch with coated O-ring by tightening it to 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.). Then install the flow control valve and pressure port union with the correct torque of 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). The vane pump oil reservoir sub-assembly receives a new O-ring then gets fastened with three bolts to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Finally, install the vane pump assembly with two bolts at 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.), connect the oil pressure switch connector, ensuring no oil adheres, connect the pressure feed tube assembly with a new gasket and union bolt at 51 Nm (520 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.), reconnect the return hose, install the fan and generator V belt, reconnect the negative battery terminal at 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm, 35 inch lbs.), add power steering fluid, bleed the system, check for leaks, and reinstall the engine under cover sub-assembly No. 1 (for 4WD and Pre-Runner) at 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.).
