2006 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2006 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The power steering pump maintenance process begins by disconnecting the negative battery cable followed by removing engine under cover sub-assembly No. 1 and the fan and generator V belt. The power steering fluid must be drained before performing the following steps: remove the return hose from the pressure feed tube assembly through its clip and disconnect both hose and take off the union bolt and its gasket. Acceptance of the vane pump begins with disconnecting the vane pressure switch connector and when finished unscrewing its two bolts. Use Special Service Tools 09630-00014 (09631-00132) to fix the vane pump assembly in place while using a vise but avoid excessive tightening of the tools. Unscrewing three bolts from the vane pump oil reservoir sub-assembly will allow its removal along with the O-ring. First separate the flow control valve by jointlessly uninstalling the pressure port union along with its O-ring and finally draw out the valve assembly along with its compression spring. Slowly take off the power steering oil pressure switch without damaging it and then separate the vane pump housing rear through the removal of four bolts along with their O-rings. First remove the pulley shaft sub-assembly by taking off its snap ring then its pulley shaft before both the vane pump rotor and ten vane plates. Lift off the vane pump cam ring while also separating the vane pump side plate front from its mount points. Additionally extract the O-rings that are situated on the side plate as well as the vane pump housing front. Use a screwdriver to remove the vane pump housing oil seal while paying attention to preserve the vane pump housing front. The oil clearance needs inspection using both a micrometer and a caliper gauge to verify it meets the specified standards. Measure the rotor and plates of the vane pump in terms of height length and thickness while assuring they exceed minimum standards. The smooth operation and leakage of the flow control valve should be tested along with a measurement of the compression spring free length. If any measurement fails to meet specifications then replace the vane pump assembly. Check whether the pressure port union sub-assembly shows signs of damage before installing a new one. The installation requires power steering fluid coating of specified parts followed by vane pump housing oil seal installation using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a press while maintaining correct orientation. Position the pulley shaft sub-assembly by keeping the oil seal lip free from damage and set the vane pump side plate front and cam ring with their dents properly aligned. Begin by inserting the vane pump rotor which has the inscribed mark facing outward then coat the vane plates with power steering fluid followed by installation of a new snap ring to secure them. Secure the vane pump housing rear using a new O-ring by aligning the straight pin then tighten the four bolts to 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). The power steering oil pressure switch requires 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) torque during installation but the preload must be checked for proper pump rotation. Begin by attaching the vane pump oil reservoir sub-assembly through three bolts while applying torque at 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). The installation of the flow control valve and pressure port union requires accurate torque of 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). Finally, install the vane pump assembly with two bolts at 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.), connect the oil pressure switch connector, install the pressure feed tube assembly with a new gasket and union bolt at 51 Nm (520 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.), connect the return hose, reinstall the fan and generator V belt, reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal at 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm, 35 inch lbs.), add power steering fluid, bleed the system, check for leaks, and reinstall the engine under cover sub-assembly No. 1 (for 4WD and Pre-Runner) at 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.).
