2005 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Power Steering Pump on 2005 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Begin the repair procedure of Power Steering Pump (VANE PUMP ASSY 2TR-FE) by first disconnecting the negative battery terminal cable followed by the removal of engine under cover sub-assy No.1 moldings for 4WD and pre-runner drive types. The procedure starts with power steering fluid drain and the V-belt removal of the fan and generator followed by pressure feed tube assembly disconnection from the clip and return hose separation before eliminating union bolt and gasket. Start by disconnecting the vane pump assembly through disconnecting the oil pressure switch connector while you remove two bolts. Place the vane pump assembly in a specialized vise (Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132) then remove the vane pump oil reservoir sub-assy by extracting three bolts together with the O-ring. First disconnect the power steering oil pressure switch then take out the flow control valve and compression spring without damaging any component. Use a screwdriver to disassemble the W/pulley shaft sub-assy by removing its snap ring and pull out the pulley shaft. Start by taking out four bolts and the O-ring from the vane pump housing rear. The service requires removing the vane pump rotor and vane pump cam ring as well as the vane pump side plate front during which O-rings must be properly extracted. The vane pump housing oil seal removal requires carefully using Special Service Tool. The oil clearance measurement with micrometers and calipers needs to match the specified standard and maximum values. Determine the vane pump rotor and vane pump plate length along with measurements for maximum clearance. Check the flow control valve for proper functioning while examining it for any leaks and test the compression spring by measuring its free length. The entire vane pump assembly must be replaced because any component that sustains damage or fails to meet its specifications. You must position a new vane pump housing oil seal correctly before adding the W/ pulley shaft sub-assy while protecting the oil seal lip. Begin by installing the vane pump side plate front while using new O-rings followed by the vane pump cam ring which then needs installation alongside the rotor while maintaining correct orientation. Attach the vane pump housing rear by using the new O-ring but torque it to 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.) before validating the pump preload and rotating torque according to specifications. Position first the power steering oil pressure switch before adding the flow control valve and pressure port union while torqueing those components to 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). Connect the oil pressure switch connector after bolting the vane pump together with new O-rings and two bolts then torquing them to 21 Nm. Place the new gasket on the pressure feed tube assembly before tightening the union bolt to 51 Nm (520 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.). Then proceed with connecting the return hose piping. After installing the fan and generator V-belt you must connect the cable to the negative battery terminal with a torque of 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm, 35 inch lbs.) then add power steering fluid before bleeding the system and examining it for leaks and reattaching engine under cover sub-assy No.1 with a torque of 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.).
