2006 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Vapor Canister on 2006 Toyota Prius?
A: The service and repair of the Evaporative Emission Control Canister requires users to first release fuel system pressure before removing rear No. 2 floor board, rear deck floor box, rear No. 3 floor board followed by disconnecting the negative battery terminal cable with a minimum 90-second wait to deactivate the Air Bag and seat belt pretensioners. Use a clip remover to detach the lower center instrument panel finish panel, rear seat cushion assembly, rear floor service hole cover, front floor panel brace and front exhaust pipe by folding back the front floor carpet and disconnecting the heated oxygen sensor connector. Then remove the grommet followed by taking out bolts and compression springs. The next step requires disconnection of the tail pipe from its front exhaust pipe followed by taking off the front exhaust pipe from its supports. To complete the removal procedure first disconnect the pressure switching valve connector then separate fuel tank sub-assembly and canister by removing clamps and wire harness clamp and finally detach the canister hoses. To install attach the canister with the bolt and two nuts and apply 6.0 N.m (61 kgf.cm and 53 in.lbf) torque then reconnect the canister hoses followed by reinstallation of the clamps and pressure switching valve connector. Reinstall the fuel tank sub-assembly with the front exhaust pipe while inspecting the compression spring free length through a vernier caliper measurement to maintain at least 40.5 mm (1.594 in.) and replace if necessary. Tighten this new gasket against the exhaust manifold before you secure the exhaust pipe supports followed by compression spring and bolt installation at 43 N.m (438 kgf.cm, 32 ft.lbf). After installation of the heated oxygen sensor you can proceed with the front floor carpet reinstallation. To complete the installation finish by reconnecting the cable to the negative battery terminal followed by a leak check together with rear and lower center component refit before all systems require initialization after reconnecting the battery.
