2006 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the TPMS Sensor and Transmitter on 2006 Toyota Prius?
A: The first step for servicing the Tire Pressure Warning Valve and Transmitter includes taking off the front and rear wheels followed by removing the tire pressure warning valve sub-assembly after releasing air from the tire with valve core and cap removal. You should first check that the tire has sufficient air pressure before removing the washer and nut which secure the tire pressure warning valve sensor and carefully lowering the sensor inside the tire. Maintain possession of the removed cap and valve core together with the washer and nut. Use the shoe of the tire remover to loosen the bead yet handle the tire pressure warning valve to avoid contact damage because of tire bead interference. Remove the upper bead first followed by extracting the valve sensor from the tire then remove the lower bead while examining the grommet for any cracks or damage before replacing it and its washer and nut components as required. The tire pressure warning valve installation hole requires the valve to be inserted from the inner rim surface with no visible debris or damage. Object identification number needs to be recorded for future ECU registration process. Set the washer onto the tire pressure monitor valve rim side and apply the nut to reach a torque of 4.0 Nm (41 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.) while checking that no waste remains on the washer or nut and inspecting for damage or waste on the grommet. Recheck the tire pressure by applying soap water after setting the specified torque on the valve nut. Position the valve sensor correctly before you start with the lower tire bead installation to prevent sensor interference before you install the upper bead without clamping it. Finish by installing the wheels to their respective areas with 131 Nm (1,340 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.) torque then check the tire for issues before adding it to the database and inspect the tire pressure warning system. The lithium battery can be disposed properly after removing it from the tire pressure monitor valve by extracting the cover and severing the battery terminals attached to the base board.
