2006 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the knock sensor on 2006 Toyota Prius?
A: The first step to servicing the knock sensor includes disconnecting the battery cable from the negative terminal then waiting 90 seconds to stop activation of Air Bags and seat belt pretensioners. Before servicing the knock sensor, drain the engine coolant first by removing the radiator support cover along with the engine under cover on the left-hand side. Start by removing the dipstick with its guide and wire harness clamp while also taking out the bolt securing the guide before releasing the air filter parts. Unfasten all components attached to the intake manifold sub-assembly starting with the ventilation hoses and fuel vapor feed hoses and water by-pass hoses next to discard the throttle control motor connector and throttle position sensor connector and wire harness clamps and connector clamp followed by disconnecting all bolts and nuts and the gasket from the cylinder head. The knock sensor installation requires detachment of its connector with the removal of the sensor and nut. Affix the new knock sensor after positioning it correctly while tightening the nut to 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) and connect the knock sensor connector. Use a new gasket on the cylinder head and fix it to the intake manifold with 3 bolts and 2 nuts at 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf). Connect the No. 1 fuel vapor feed hose to the harness clamp bracket with a bolt at 9.0 N.m (92 kgf.cm, 80 in.lbf) while following it with connector clamp and 3 wire harness clamps before installing the throttle position sensor and throttle control motor connectors and the water by-pass hoses. Lubricate a fresh O-ring with engine oil before applying it to the dipstick guide where you should fasten it using a bolt torqued to 9.0 N.m (92 kgf.cm, 80 in.lbf). Then reconnect the clamp and install the dipstick. Reinstall the air cleaner assembly before connecting the negative battery terminal cable then pouring engine coolant while checking for leakage and placing back the engine under cover LH and radiator support opening cover. The system might need initialization following negative battery terminal reconnection so users need to complete this step.
