2006 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2006 Toyota Prius?
A: Begin the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring service by disconnecting battery power cable from the negative terminal for at least 90 seconds to deactivate the seat belts and Air Bags. First straighten the front wheels to the forward direction before taking off the No. 2 and No. 3 steering wheel cover lower pieces followed by removing the steering pad assembly and steering wheel assembly components. First disconnect the Air Bag connector after removing both the steering column cover and the clock spring sub-assembly while avoiding harm to the Air Bag wire harness before breaking three claws to extract the clock spring. Begin by installing the clock spring sub-assembly which requires straight-wheel orientation and neutral turn signal switch position because of the danger of pin breakage. Built-in pins need removal before the new clock spring installation when users connect the Air Bag connector to prevent wire harness damage. Position the clock spring by rotating it counterclockwise until firm before proceeding with clockwise rotation of about 2.5 turns while making sure not to use the Air Bag wire harness to turn the cable. The next installation steps should include placing the steering wheel assembly and the steering pad assembly followed by attaching both lower steering wheel covers. Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal then check the steering pad assembly and conduct system initialization because some systems need it when the battery connection is established. To complete the procedure lastly test the SRS warning light while inspecting the positioning of the wheel.
