2006 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2006 Toyota Highlander?
A: The service and repair procedure of the timing chain starts by removing the hood sub-assembly along with the front wheel RH, engine under cover No. 1, and the combination of front fender splash shield front RH and front fender apron seal RH. After draining the engine oil users should install new components following gasket application to the drain plug which should be torqued to 25 Nm (255 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.). The service requires you to disconnect the exhaust pipe assembly front, engine moving control rod w/bracket, engine mounting stay No. 2 RH, engine mounting bracket No. 2 RH, fan and generator V belt, engine cover sub-assembly No. 1, separate the engine wire, generator assembly, and vane pump assembly without removing the hose. The maintenance requires elimination of ignition coil assembly alongside ventilation hoses No. 1 and No. 2 and cylinder head cover sub-assembly. First position the Number 1 cylinder at TDC/compression and then use Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855, 09330-00021) to fix the pulley and loosen the bolt. Finish by using Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) to remove the bolt and pulley. The technician should first remove three important components: crankshaft position sensor, oil pan sub-assembly, chain tensioner assembly No. 1, and V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly. Hook the engine chain hoist to engine hangers and detach engine mounting insulator FR and steering gear return hose clamp before taking off 4 nuts from the engine mounting insulator RH while raising the engine. First disconnect the engine mounting bracket RH with its 3 bolts until it is completely free. Proceed to take away the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly through dismantling the stud bolt from the drive belt tensioner and 14 bolts and 2 nuts then removing the timing chain cover with careful prying methods. To continue start by removing the crankshaft position sensor plate Number 1 and the chain tensioner slipper along with integration of the Chain vibration damper Number 1 and the sub-assembly and vehicle sprocket from the crankshaft timing gear. The No. 2 chain sub-assembly requires positioning the crankshaft key horizontally left and using yellow colored links to match timing marks of the sprocket before installing the sprockets and chain to the crankshaft and oil pump shaft while temporarily securing the oil pump driven sprocket with a nut then installing the chain tensioner plate with nut torqued to 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9.0 ft. lbs.). Affix the oil pump driven sprocket adjusting hole across the oil pump groove while keeping the sprocket fixed with a 4 mm (0.16 inch) bar before torquing the nut to 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.). Align the key of the crankshaft at the 90-degree counterclockwise position to the top opening. First, secure vibration damper No. 1 to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) before proceeding with the chain sub-assembly when the No. 1 cylinder rests at TDC/compression and the camshaft timing sprockets align their timing marks with bearing caps. The sprocket must be tapped in using Special Service Tool: 09309-37010 then the mark links must be aligned with the timing marks before installing the chain. After installing the chain tensioner slipper with 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.), install crankshaft position sensor plate No. 1 then add the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly by wiping off any contact surface oil and applying specified seal packing. You need to install the timing chain cover by using 14 bolts and two nuts that require the following torque settings: Bolt A has 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.), while Bolt B needs 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) and Bolt C requires 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) along with Nut that needs 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Afterward, you have to mount the stud bolt onto the drive belt tensioner with a torque Secure the plunger on chain tensioner assembly No. 1 before you install a new gasket and the two nuts with a torque setting of 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Check the plunger knock pin and slipper operation, then install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly, ignition coil assembly (torque: 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.)), vane pump assembly, generator assembly, engine wire, fan and generator V belt, engine mounting bracket No. 2 RH (torque: 52 Nm (531 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.)), engine mounting stay No. 2 RH (torque: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)), engine moving control rod w/bracket, exhaust pipe assembly front, front wheel RH, and hood sub-assembly (torque: 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.)). Before concluding the maintenance process perform a check for any oil leaks after adding adequate engine oil.
