2006 Toyota Camry Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain on 2006 Toyota Camry?
A: Begin the timing chain replacement by taking out the hood sub-assembly, front wheel on the right-hand side, engine under covers left-hand side and right-hand side, and front fender apron seal located on the right-hand side. The engine oil draining process should be followed by new gasket and drain plug installation requiring 25 Nm torque application (255 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.). The service procedure requires detachment of exhaust pipe assembly front along with engine moving control rod with bracket and engine mounting stay No.2 RH and engine mounting bracket No.2 RH. The procedure begins by removing the V belt from fan and generator then discarding the engine cover sub-assembly No.1 before eliminating the engine wire followed by extracting the generator assembly and vane pump assembly through the hose. Unbolt the ignition coil assembly while disconnecting the engine wire harness clamp before completing the process with 8 bolts and 2 nuts. Position the number 1 cylinder at TDC/compression before using SST to remove the crankshaft pulley by fixing it then loosening the bolt before removing the bolt and pulley. You need SST 09032-00100 to break the sealer when you take out the 12 bolts and 2 nuts on the crankshaft position sensor and the oil pan sub-assembly. Remove the chain tensioner assembly No.1 while maintaining absolute crankshaft stillness before you can proceed to remove the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly. Install engine hangers No. 1 and No. 2 using bolts which should be torqued to 38 Nm (387 kgf-cm, 28 ft. lbs.) After which disconnect the engine mounting insulator FR by using a chain hoist for hanger removal and then remove the engine mounting bracket RH. The timing chain cover sub-assembly requires removal of the drive belt tensioner stud bolt followed by 14 bolts and 2 nuts then careful prying will remove the timing chain cover. The repair process starts with removal of crankshaft position sensor plate No.1 and chain tensioner slipper as well as chain vibration damper No.1 and chain sub-assembly and crankshaft timing gear or sprocket from the system. The installation of the No.2 chain sub-assembly requires rotating the crankshaft 90° counter-clockwise before aligning the oil pump driven sprocket while using a 4 mm bar to secure it. Then remove the nut and bolt and chain tensioner plate and spring. Mount the No.2 chain sub-assembly by orienting the crankshaft key to its left horizontal position, setting the timing marks on the mark links, adding sprockets with chain, temporarily tightening the oil pump driven sprocket, then installing the chain tensioner plate using the bolt before torquing to 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Secure the oil pump driven sprocket adjusting hole to the oil pump groove by using a 4 mm bar locking tool before installing the nut and torquing it up to 30 Nm (301 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.). The setup process requires clockwise crankshaft rotation of 90-degrees until the crankshaft key aligns with the top position. The installation of chain vibration damper No.1 requires a torque of 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) while the chain sub-assembly must be aligned with the camshaft timing gear/sprocket and bearing caps timing marks as the crankshaft turns to position the key upward until the mark link lines up with the crankshaft timing sprocket before tapping in the sprocket using SST 09309-37010 and installing the chain. Mount the chain tensioner slipper keeping its orientation to 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) while installing plate number 1 of the crankshaft position sensor with its forward-facing feature. The timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly needs installation with 14 bolts and 2 nuts following seal packing application (Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) in a continuous bead and torquing to specified values. Installation of the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly requires a specific torque value alongside the engine mounting bracket RH together with the engine mounting insulator RH. Use 12 bolts and 2 nuts to install the oil pan sub-assembly when applying new packing and cleaning the contact surface of oil residues. The system includes installation of No.1 chain tensioner assembly and crankshaft position sensor together with crankshaft pulley while tightening the pulley bolt to 170 Nm (1,733 kgf-cm, 125 ft. lbs.). The procedure ends with the installation of the cylinder head cover sub-assembly, ignition coil assembly, vane pump assembly, generator assembly, engine wire, fan and generator V belt, engine mounting bracket No.2 RH, engine mounting stay No.2 RH, engine moving control rod with bracket, exhaust pipe assembly front, front wheel RH, and hood sub-assembly, torquing the hood to 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.), add engine oil, and check for leaks.
