2006 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a starter motor on 2006 Scion xB?
A: First disconnect the negative battery cable to remove the starter motor while allowing at least ninety seconds of wait to avoid seat belt pretensioner and Air Bag function. Start by uninstalling the engine under cover LH through bolting out its 4 bolts and nut and removing the cover. This will be followed by disassembling the engine under cover RH by unthreading the 4 bolts and taking away the cover. Before proceeding begin by pulling out the flywheel housing side cover. Begin starter assembly replacement by taking out the nut followed by the starter wire before disconnecting the starter connector and removing the 2 bolts which will free the starter. Install the starter assembly by fixing the 2 bolts properly before tightening them to 37 N.m (377 kgf.cm, 27 ft.lbf). Use a torque wrench to tighten the starter wire nut on terminal 30 until it achieves 9.8 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf) while connecting the starter connector. The installation requires the flywheel housing side cover claw to be fully inserted so it makes a "click" sound before finishing; throw out the existing cover if its claw shows any deformation. First, position the engine under cover RH and install the 4 bolts at 5.0 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf) then install the engine under cover LH with its nut and 4 bolts at the same 5.0 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf) torque. Reestablish the cable connection to the negative battery terminal closure.
