2005 Scion xB Starter Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to overhaul the starter motor on 2005 Scion xB?
A: The first step for repairing the starter motor involves removing the repair kit through lead wire disconnection and two screws unscrewing from the starter housing before extracting the kit and return spring and plunger. Use a screwdriver to detach the starter commutator end frame cover. Secure the starter yoke assembly with the commutator end frame assembly by removing the two through bolts followed by starter armature assembly extraction through snap ring pliers removal of the components. The starter armature plate must first be taken off off the starter yoke before moving on to the three planet gears. The starter center bearing clutch sub-assembly necessitates removal of the clutch along with its drive lever set pin from the starter drive housing followed by set pin removal from the clutch. An ohmmeter should inspect the starter armature assembly for the existence of commutator segment continuity; nonexistence indicates armature replacement. A continuity test between the armature coil core and commutator should be performed; when ground continuity exists replace the armature. Sand the commutator with 400-grit paper or use a lathe to clean it. Then measure the length with calipers before getting a new armature when the measurement passes 3.8 mm (0.150 in.). Check the brush holder for continuing electrical connection between positive and negative brushes, repair or replace the starter assembly if any electrical connection is detected. Professional inspection of the planetary gear and internal gear and starter clutch should evaluate damage and wear which requires replacement of affected elements. All examinations should be conducted to ensure both free rotation and locking ability of the starter clutch pinion gear. Nonfunctional center bearing clutch sub-assemblies need replacement at this time. The repair service starter kit requires a plunger return test followed by starter assembly replacement when return is not quick and an ohmmeter should be used to check pull-in coil and holding coil continuity and replace the starter assembly if no continuity is shown. The installation of the starter center bearing clutch sub-assembly requires the drive lever set pin attachment followed by placing it inside the starter drive housing. Before addition of three planet gears the planetary shaft must receive grease coating on its planet gears and pin parts. The starter yoke assembly needs the starter armature plate to be placed inside with proper alignment followed by grease application to the washer plate and armature shaft before installing the armature shaft into the starter commutator end frame assembly. Insert the plate washer using snap ring pliers as you measure snap ring length which requires replacement if it reaches 5.0 mm (0.197 in.). The procedure requires reinstalling the starter commutator end frame cover while positioning the starter commutator rubber end frame to the starter yoke assembly before installing the starter yoke assembly onto the commutator end frame. Fasten the starter yoke assembly to the starter housing by inserting its key into the keyway then tighten the two through bolts to 6.0 Nm (61 kgf.cm, 53 in.lbf). Finish the repair by adding grease to the plunger and hook then connect them to the drive lever before installing the plunger with return spring. Secure everything with two screws that receive 7.5 Nm (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf). Lastly, wire the lead to the terminal and secure it with a nut before tightening it to 10 Nm (102 kgf.cm, 7.4 ft.lbf).
