2004 Scion xB Starter Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to overhaul the starter motor on 2004 Scion xB?
A: First detach the lead wire then loosen the two housing screws of the repair service starter kit before withdrawing the start-up assembly together with its return spring and plunger. The starter commutator end frame cover can be removed by using a screwdriver. The starter yoke assembly with the commutator end frame assembly need to be pulled together due to two through bolts before separating the yoke assembly from the end frame assembly. Snap ring pliers should be used to separate the snap ring and plate washer which enables you to extract the starter armature assembly from the commutator end frame assembly. Remove the starter armature plate from the starter yoke and then disconnect the three planet gears. The technician removes the starter center bearing clutch with drive lever set pin from the starter drive housing before eliminating the drive lever set pin. An ohmmeter checks commutator segment continuity in the starter armature assembly; when no continuity is detected the armature requires replacement. Garage tests should be conducted to check commutator to armature core core continuity; when any ground connection appears the armature needs replacement. Sandpaper 400-grit or a lathe can clean a dirty or burnt commutator surface before using vernier calipers to check length. Replace the armature if measurement shows more than 3.8 mm (0.150 in.) commutator length. The measurement of brush length in the starter commutator end frame assembly should not be less than 9.0 mm (0.354 in.) otherwise replace the starter assembly. The brush holder should be inspected for positive-negative brush continuity; continuous testing requires replacement of the starter assembly. The gear teeth of the planetary gear and internal gear and starter clutch need inspection for wear and damage because replacement parts may be needed. The starter clutch pinion gear should rotate freely in both directions but must lock counterclockwise which requires a new center bearing clutch sub-assembly. Perform these checks on the repair service starter kit plunger return function and pull-in coil and holding coil continuity tests to determine whether replacement of the starter assembly is needed. The first procedure is to attach the drive lever set pin to the starter center bearing clutch and insert it within the starter drive housing. Apply lubricant to both the planet gears and their respective pins that are a part of the planetary shaft prior to assembly. Add the starter armature plate into the starter yoke assembly while properly positioning it and then apply grease to the washer plate and armature shaft before placing the armature shaft into the starter commutator end frame assembly. Snap ring pliers must be used to install the plate washer and snap ring with a length constraint of 5.0 mm (0.197 in.). To finish the installation the technician should position the starter commutator end frame cover properly then align the starter commutator rubber end frame with the starter yoke before setting the starter yoke assembly to the starter commutator end frame. Install the starter yoke assembly on the starter housing keyway by guiding the key through the slot and fasten it using two through bolts which must be torqued to 6.0 Nm (61 kgf.cm, 53 in.lbf). You should start by greasing the plunger and hook before installing the plunger with the return spring and screwing the repair service starter kit into position using two screws tightened to 7.5 Nm (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf). Then connect the lead wire to the terminal by tightening the nut to 10 Nm (102 kgf.cm, 7.4 ft.lbf).
