2006 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the ignition switch on 2006 Scion xB?
A: Service of the ignition switch requires disconnecting the battery cable from the negative terminal then waiting for at least 90 seconds to avoid Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner deployment. The steering column cover becomes accessible after removing three screws from both lower and upper sections by rotating the steering wheel accordingly. Detach the 2 connectors with their attached wire harness clamps that are currently mounted on the steering column. The steering column upper with switch bracket assembly can be taken out using these steps: First mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts with a centering punch and then drill holes into the bolt heads using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill. Finally, detach the bolts using a screw extractor. Begin by removing the ignition switch assembly through the process of taking out its 2 screws and switch from the steering column bracket. The ignition switch assembly must be secured onto the steering column bracket through screw installation of the two fasteners. Secure the steering column upper along with its switch bracket and clamp upper through two fresh steering lock set bolts which need to be tightened until the bolts reach the breaking point. Connect the two connectors and use wire harness clamps for securement. Install the steering column lower and upper covers with their 3 screws while maneuvering the steering wheel as needed before reconnecting the negative battery cable.
