2006 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH on 2006 Scion xB?
A: An on-vehicle inspection starts by applying parking brake and turning ignition switch ON while depressing the brake pedal to verify engine start only in N or P positions along with correct operation of Back Up light when entering R position. Starting with battery detachment proceed to take out the transmission control cable assembly by removing the control cable from the control shaft lever and the bracket. The procedure for removal includes disconnecting the park/neutral position switch connector followed by nut removal and then washing and control shaft lever removal before unlocking the washer and taking off the manual valve shaft nut and then extracting the switch. To evaluate the switch assembly performance, measure the resistance at each position until the specified measurements show incorrect results indicating the need to replace the switch assembly. Follow this procedure to adjust the switch by firstly loosening the two bolts while keeping the shift lever in N position with the groove correctly aligned to the neutral basic line and then tightening both bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). After adjustment, perform another inspection. During installation process first secure the park/neutral position switch to the manual valve shaft before placing the two bolts temporarily and setting a new lock washer alongside the manual valve shaft nut to 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.) torque. The control shaft lever gets temporarily installed before performing a counterclockwise turn until it stops followed by a clockwise turn of two notches to reach the neutral basic line where the switch can be positioned while bolting at 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs). First use a screwdriver to stake the nut with its lock washer then install the control shaft lever with washer and nut while tightening it to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Proceed to install the transmission control cable assembly by adding the control cable to the control shaft lever followed by bracket attachment using a new clip before reattaching the battery. The shift lever position should be checked and inspected alongside the park/neutral position switch assembly.
