2006 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2006 Scion tC?
A: The first step to service the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring requires disconnecting the negative battery cable and waiting 90 seconds to avoid activating Air Bags and seat belt pretensioners. Start by removing the steering pad assembly followed by correct alignment of front wheels when you separate the steering wheel assembly. Service the Clock Spring sub-assembly by removing its lower steering column cover before lifting the upper cover to detach the three claws while maintaining care for the Air Bag wire harness. The clock spring sub-assembly requires front wheel straightness and a neutral turn signal switch position before installation to prevent pin snapping. After connector installation onto the clock spring take special caution with the Air Bag wire harness before applying the upper steering column cover and finally the lower steering column cover. The clock spring must proceed during counterclockwise rotation until tightened before moving to clockwise rotation through 2.5 turns so operators can avoid rotating it with the Air Bag wire harness. The next step involves placing the steering wheel assembly before installing the steering pad assembly while reattaching the cable to the negative battery terminal. Perform system initialization when restarting the battery and inspect the steering pad assembly along with inspecting the steering wheel position. The SRS warning light needs checking after battery reinstallation.
