2005 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Seal in a timing gear case or timing chain case on 2005 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step to replace the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal (2TR-FE) requires removing engine under cover sub-assembly No.1 through bolt elimination from its four attachment points. The first step requires draining the engine coolant before removing the radiator support to frame seal LH and the fan shroud as a next step. Begin replacement of the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal (2TR-FE) by first taking off the crankshaft pulley bolt along with the bracket (when air conditioning is present). The crankshaft pulley bolt will be loosened up to 2 or 3 threads with the help of Special Service Tools: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021. The crankshaft pulley along with its bolt becomes removable after installing Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09954-05021). The removal process of an oil seal begins by using a cutter knife to trim its edges followed by prying it out with a taped screwdriver to inspect the crankshaft for damage or require smoothing down rough areas with 400-grit sandpaper. The new oil seal installation process starts with applying a thin coating of MP grease onto its lip followed by checking for foreign particles and tapping it in uniformly until it reaches the timing chain cover edge with Special Service Tool: 09223-50010 while maintaining a straight installation and cleaning off excess grease from the crankshaft. First install the new crankshaft pulley bolt temporarily before using Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to tighten the bolt to 260 Nm (2,651 kgf-cm, 192 ft. lbs.) while the tool holds the pulley. The torque sequence includes a prohibition against using the original pulley bolt. First, screw the bracket to its bolt (when AC is present) but torque the bolt to 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 inch lbs.). After that, install the fan shroud followed by the LH radiator support to frame seal before adding engine coolant. Inspection for engine coolant and oil leakages should be performed before reinstallation of the 1st engine under cover sub-assembly with its 4 bolts tightened to 30Nm torque (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.).
