2005 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2005 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step to handle the timing chain on a 2005 Toyota Truck Tacoma 2WD L4-2.7L (2TR-FE) involves removing the hood sub-assembly and draining the fuel system pressure followed by disconnecting all 4 bolts from each engine under cover sub-assembly No.1 and No.2. First drain all engine fluid before removing the battery tray together with the battery. The service requires removal of three bolts from the radiator support to frame seal LH alongside the fan shroud together with the air cleaner cap and air cleaner filter element and air cleaner case. Disassemble the vane pump unit by detaching its connector along with 2 bolts yet preserve the hose connection. Start by removing radiator hose No.2 followed by the separation of compressor and magnetic clutch by disconnecting power lines and removing indicated bolt and 4 bolts while supporting the vane pump with a rope. The next procedure includes removing the radiator hose inlet followed by separating the water hose sub-assembly and disconnecting all fuel hoses with air injection system hoses included. The first step involves disconnecting the engine wire followed by exhaust pipe assembly removal (front and rear sections) and manual transmission and automatic transmission separation as well as engine disassembly. Manual transmission requires users to uninstall the clutch cover followed by removing the clutch disc along with the flywheel sub-assembly through the use of Special Service Tools: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021. You must take out the drive plate together with the ring gear sub-assembly for automatic transmission. The procedure starts with removing two rear end plate bolts before continuing with the intake air connector followed by the generator assembly then the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly and idler pulley sub-assembly Number One. When air conditioning exists the task will include removing the idle pulley assembly along with its bracket followed by cranking out the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor, intake manifold to head gasket No.1 as well as the cylinder head cover sub-assembly. The removal of the crankshaft pulley requires you to set the No.1 cylinder at TDC/compression while turning the pulley clockwise to line up with "0" before using Special Service Tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt. Use Special Service Tool: 09032-00100 to cut the applied sealer while removing the oil level gage sub-assembly and the oil pan sub-assembly No.2 by detaching 18 bolts and two nuts. First remove the oil strainer sub-assembly after which you can carefully pry off the oil pan sub-assembly. Use proper caution to keep the crankshaft from rotating as you remove the timing chain cover together with the timing chain guide and chain tensioner assembly No.1. The chain tensioner slipper together with chain vibration dampers No.1, No.2, and No.3 along with chain tensioner No.2 must be removed. The repair process for No.2 chain sub-assembly requires removing its bolt and balance shaft drive gear shaft and gear while installing a new chain with properly aligned mark links and applying 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.) torque to the balance shaft drive gear bolt and verifying all timing marks are correctly positioned.
