2006 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the timing chain on 2006 Toyota Tacoma?
A: You can start servicing the timing chain on a 2006 Toyota Truck Tacoma 2WD L4-2.7L (2TR-FE) by first removing the hood sub-assembly along with draining the fuel system pressure followed by removing the No. 1 and No. 2 engine under cover sub-assemblies for 4WD and Pre-Runner models. You should drain both oil and coolant then take out the battery while simultaneously removing its tray. The servicing process starts with removing the VW Jetta radiator support to frame seal LH as well as fan shroud and all sub-assemblies of air cleaner cap component alongside air cleaner filter element component and air cleaner case. Perform this operation by unfastening all bolts. The vane pump connector needs to be removed first before the technician separates the vane pump from the other components while keeping the hose connected. You should disconnect the No. 2 radiator hose while performing the separation of the compressor and magnetic clutch before disconnecting all hoses and wires. The exhaust pipe assembly needs to be separated along with the front exhaust pipe assembly and transmission unit assembly before extracting the engine assembly and its accompanying components which include clutch cover assembly and clutch disc assembly and flywheel sub-assembly for manual transmission while drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly should be removed for automatic transmission and finally the rear end plate. Continue by taking off the intake air connector and generator assembly along with the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly and No. 1 idler pulley sub-assembly and idle pulley assembly with bracket (for air conditioning) as well as crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor and No. 1 intake manifold to head gasket cylinder head cover sub-assembly and crankshaft pulley. Using Special Service Tool 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021, set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression position then use the tools to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt. Treatment of the applied sealer requires Special Service Tool: 09032-00100 for precise cutting through before you can remove oil level gage sub-assembly, No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly by removing bolts and nuts. First disconnect the oil strainer sub-assembly followed by the oil pan sub-assembly and timing chain cover as well as the timing chain guide and No. 1 chain tensioner assembly with its chain tensioner slipper together with the No. 1 chain vibration damper and chain sub-assembly and crankshaft timing gear or sprocket before taking off the No. 2 chain vibration damper and No. 3 chain vibration damper and No. 2 chain tensioner assembly. The installation process starts by pairing the timing marks on the No. 2 chain sub-assembly and continuing with chain tensioner assembly and No. 3 chain vibration damper followed by No. 2 chain vibration damper and crankshaft timing gear or sprocket along with No. 1 chain vibration damper and chain sub-assembly. All paint markings must match the timing marks. The chain tensioner slipper and No. 1 chain tensioner assembly, timing chain guide should be installed before adding the timing chain cover. Seal packing (Part No. 08826-00080) must be applied to the oil pan sub-assembly before installing the oil strainer sub-assembly and No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly. All installation should follow the specified torque values. Reinstall the oil level gage sub-assembly, crankshaft pulley, cylinder head cover sub-assembly, No. 1 intake manifold to head gasket, camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, idle pulley assembly with bracket, No. 1 idler pulley sub-assembly, V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly, generator assembly, intake air connector, rear end plate, drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly (for automatic transmission), flywheel sub-assembly (for manual transmission), clutch disc assembly (for manual transmission), clutch cover assembly (for manual transmission), engine assembly, automatic transmission assembly, manual transmission unit assembly, exhaust pipe assembly front, exhaust pipe assembly tail, and reconnect all hoses and wires. Engine oil and coolant need addition followed by leak checking to finish installation of engine under cover sub-assemblies prior to hood sub-assembly fastening.
