2005 Toyota Sequoia Rack And Pinion Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to reassemble the power Rack And Pinion on 2005 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Symmetric installation requires special service tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00330, 09951-00490, 09952-06010) or 09950-70010 (09951-07360) to press fit a new oil seal when inserting it into the correct position after applying power steering fluid to the seal lip. Simultaneously, the indicated parts require a coating of power steering fluid or molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. After placing special service tool: 09631-20051 onto the rack and pinion you must apply power steering fluid to the rack before slowly inserting it into the rack housing without harming the oil seal lip followed by tool removal. Insert the new O-ring into the rack and pinion bushing by applying power steering fluid before wrapping it with vinyl tape to shield the oil seal lip. Then install the bushing paying attention to its correct orientation. Use special service tool: 09631-16010 to set the wire on the cylinder end stopper at 400-500 degrees clockwise rotation through its installation hole which faces the rack housing slot. Test the air tightness using special service tool: 09631-12071 under 53 kPa (400 mmHg, 15.75 in.Hg) vacuum pressure for 30 seconds to detect any vacuum modification that signals an O-ring seal failure. The control valve assembly installation requires vinyl tape protection of the valve shaft and power steering fluid treatment of Teflon rings before a careful insertion into the valve housing to prevent damage to both components. Before installation of the rack housing place a new gasket and use special service tool: 09612-22011 to correctly orient the new oil seal before installing the two bolts with 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) torque. The installation of a new self-locking nut requires stopping control valve shaft rotation using special service tool: 09616-00011 and torque application to 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.). Apply sealant (Part No. 08833-00080, three bond 1344, loctite 242 or equivalent) to 2 or 3 threads and torque the dust cover and rack housing cap using special service tool: 09816-30010 to reach 59 Nm (600 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.) and then stake the cap parts with a punch and hammer. Initially install the rack guide sub-assembly and rack guide spring before sealing the threads of the spring cap then attach the spring cap temporarily. An adjustment of total preload requires installing temporary RH and LH rack ends followed by a 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.) torque on the rack guide spring cap that returns to a 12 degrees position before using special service tool: 09616-00011 to loosening and re-tightening until the spring is non-functional for a preload range of 1.2 to 1.6 Nm (12 to 16 kgf-cm, 10.4 to 13.9 inch lbs.). After application of sealant to the lock nut threads, insert it temporarily before tightening with special service tool: 09922-10010 to 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) while ensuring the tool points in the right direction and re-evaluating total preload. Use special service tool: 09922-10010 to tighten the rack ends to 76 Nm (770 kgf-cm, 56 ft. lbs.) after aligning claw washers with rack and pinion grooves on both sides of the unit. Then use a brass bar to stake the washers while the hammer avoids impacting the rack. Tighten the clamp on the new rack boot with special service tool: 09521-24010 through careful installation into the boot groove after assuring the rack and pinion hole maintains clearness. Finish by installing the clip. Least of all you must screw the lock nut and tie rod end onto the rack end but stop when matchmarks line up before tightening the nut to 55 Nm (560 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.). Install four new O-rings that received power steering fluid coating onto the turn pressure tubes before using special service tool: 09023-38401 to mount the tubes by tightening them to 13 Nm (135 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) using a 250 mm (9.84 inch) torque wrench with parallel tool orientation.
