2005 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the throttle body on 2005 Scion xB?
A: Service and repair of the throttle body starts with draining the engine coolant. To remove the air cleaner assembly first disconnect the mass air flow meter connector together with the VSV connector and wire harness clamp and fuel vapor feed hoses No. 1 and No. 2 and ventilation hose. Afterwards unlock the 2 clamp hooks and remove the hose clamp and air cleaner cap and filter element before uninstalling the 4 bolts securing the air cleaner case. Unfastening the accelerator control cable assembly nut will be the following step. You can separate the transmission oil level gage sub-assembly with the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly by disconnecting the throttle position sensor connector and the hose and removing the bolt and oil cooler tube clamp before you take out the bolt and transmission oil filler tube and the O-ring from the tube. First disconnect the ISC valve connector then detach the throttle position sensor connector (M/T TRANSAXLE) before removing the wire harness clamp and a bolt and 2 nuts to unfasten the accelerator control cable bracket and throttle body from the engine. Remove the throttle body assembly gasket and disconnect the water by-pass hoses from their intake manifold. First uninstall the ISC valve by removing its 3 screws together with the gasket before disconnecting the throttle position sensor through screw removal. When installing the throttle position sensor position the throttle body's valve at complete closure and then insert the sensor into the body before rotating it 45 degrees while tightening it to 2.0 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 17 in.lbf). Install the ISC valve first by screwing in 3 fasteners before torquing them to 3.4 N.m (35 kgf.cm, 30 in.lbf). Attach the water by-pass hoses afterward then apply new gaskets to the throttle body and intake manifold connectors before securing all parts with the bolt and 2 nuts at 30 N.m (306 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf). Install the wire harness clamp after reconnecting the throttle position sensor connector (M/T TRANSAXLE) then ISC valve connector. The installation process for the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly involves using a new O-ring followed by tube bolt installation with 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf) torque and adding the oil cooler tube clamp with its bolt tightened to 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf) while reattaching hose and throttle position sensor connector. The technical procedure includes reattaching the transmission oil level gage assembly after which the accelerator control cable assembly must be installed while applying a torque limit of 13 N.m (133 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf). The last step in air cleaner assembly requires installing 3 bolts to fasten the air cleaner case to its bracket then torquing them to 7.8 N.m (80 kgf.cm, 69 in.lbf) and finally attaching the air cleaner inlet to the engine compartment through a bolt torqued to 7.5 N.m (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf). Before completing, add engine coolant and inspect the system for leaks.
