The Scion xB Throttle Body is an essential part of the Scion xB models' fuel injection systems, and is acclaimed for holding up its reputable and skilled formation. This essential part controls the inflow of air into the engine under the input of the accelerator through a butterfly valve. This ensures the engine does not go beyond the standard proportions of air-fuel mixture, and thus cooperates with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in the changes to fuel supply, which increases the level of fuel economy and safety. Shift from mechanical throttle to the use of the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) in newer models of xB has also helped to build the car's reliability, and to overall, the new models' improved safety features. As part of the Throttle Body system of the Scion xB, devices such as Idle Air Control valves or Throttle Position Sensors contribute to increasing output and reactivity of the car's drive train. It is important to frequently check on throttle body whether for cleaning or replacing since, when dirty, it hampers the normal functioning. Scion xB is a compact hatchback with boxy shape, and therein Scion used various engines starting from 1.5L 1NZ-FE up to more powerful 2.4L 2AZ-FE that are both empowered by the throttle body function. Being differently designed and engineered, the Scion xB Throttle Body serves as a perfect element added to the automotive market that offers drivers the desirable driving experience along with the safe car indispensable for today's roads.

Scion xB Throttle Body Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the throttle body on Scion xB?
    A:
Service and repair of the throttle body requires you to drain engine coolant first. Disconnect all connectors and clamps from the mass air flow meter and VSV connectors, wire harness clamp, fuel vapor feed hoses No. 1 and No. 2 before dislodging the ventilation hose. Unfasten the clamp hooks while loosening the clamp to remove the air cleaner cap and filter element. Perform this sequence to free the air cleaner case by removing its four bolts. Start by disconnecting the nut of the accelerator control cable assembly. To access the transmission oil level gauge sub-assembly and the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly one must first disconnect the throttle position sensor connector and the hose before removing the bolt and oil cooler tube clamp then proceeding to remove the bolt and transmission oil filler tube and the O-ring from the tube. Disconnect the ISC valve connector before taking out the throttle body assembly by pulling apart the throttle position sensor connector (M/T transaxle only) and wire harness clamp and 2 nuts and bolt which detach the accelerator control cable bracket and throttle body assembly while also removing the Intake Manifold gasket and disconnecting water by-pass hoses. First detach the ISC valve by removing its 3 screws as well as the gasket before removing the throttle position sensor with its 2 screws. Before installation begin by closing the throttle valve completely and then position the throttle position sensor into the throttle body and rotate it 45 degrees clockwise before torquing the sensor to 2.0 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 17 in.lbf). A new gasket should be installed on the throttle body while the ISC valve should be attached with 3 screws which need to be torqued to 3.4 N.m (35 kgf.cm, 30 in.lbf). The installation requires users to connect water by-pass hoses then install a new intake manifold gasket followed by securing the throttle body and accelerator control bracket with a bolt and 2 nuts torqued to 30 N.m (306 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf) before securing the wire harness clamp as well as the throttle position sensor connector for M/T transaxle and the ISC valve connector. Reconnect the hose and throttle position sensor connector after installing the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly with fresh O-ring while torquing the tube to 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf) and oil cooler tube clamp to the same torque. Install the transmission oil level gauge sub-assembly first before you install and torque the accelerator control cable assembly to 13 N.m (133 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf). The last steps involve attaching the air cleaner case to its bracket while applying 7.8 N.m (80 kgf.cm, 69 in.lbf) torque to the 3 bolts which should be followed by securing the air cleaner inlet to the engine compartment using a bolt with 7.5 N.m (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf) torque. After this, add engine coolant then perform a leak inspection.
  • Q: How to install the throttle body assembly and ensure proper functionality on Scion xB?
    A:
The installation requires you to start by applying a new gasket to the Intake Manifold before installing the throttle body assembly using four bolts torqued at 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft-lbf). After fitting the throttle hose you should link the connector with the No. 2 water by-pass hose and the No. 1 water by-pass hose and the No. 2 fuel vapor feed hose. The air cleaner cap sub-assembly requires installation of the air cleaner filter element followed by locking the sub-assembly with the hose while tightening the No. 1 air cleaner hose clamp. The No. 2 fuel vapor feed hose must be attached with the No. 2 ventilation hose to the air cleaner hose followed by installation of the vacuum switching valve assembly and mass air flow meter connector. Additionally, the wire harness must be installed. Check for coolant leaks while adding the engine coolant to the system. Use two nuts and tighten the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly to a torque level of 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 in-lbf). Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal and wait for 60 seconds before reconnection for both throttle assembly assembly work and ECM replacement. Follow the interruptive step sequence by turning the Ignition Switch to ON before depressurizing the accelerator pedal even though this turns off the engine. The sequence must restart when you press the pedal. The DLC3 tester needs connection to proceed with clearing all DTCs. Use the menus Powertrain/ Engine and ECT/ Data List/ Throttle Position Sensor Output while the engine has reached normal operating temperature to fully depress the accelerator pedal to verify the value exceeds 60% after switching off the A/C and activating N or P and double-checking the idle speed meets the factory specifications. Final verification should include driving the vehicle to check for any abnormal conditions.
