2004 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the throttle body on 2004 Scion xB?
A: Service and repair of the throttle body requires you to drain engine coolant first. Disconnect all connectors and clamps from the mass air flow meter and VSV connectors, wire harness clamp, fuel vapor feed hoses No. 1 and No. 2 before dislodging the ventilation hose. Unfasten the clamp hooks while loosening the clamp to remove the air cleaner cap and filter element. Perform this sequence to free the air cleaner case by removing its four bolts. Start by disconnecting the nut of the accelerator control cable assembly. To access the transmission oil level gauge sub-assembly and the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly one must first disconnect the throttle position sensor connector and the hose before removing the bolt and oil cooler tube clamp then proceeding to remove the bolt and transmission oil filler tube and the O-ring from the tube. Disconnect the ISC valve connector before taking out the throttle body assembly by pulling apart the throttle position sensor connector (M/T transaxle only) and wire harness clamp and 2 nuts and bolt which detach the accelerator control cable bracket and throttle body assembly while also removing the intake manifold gasket and disconnecting water by-pass hoses. First detach the ISC valve by removing its 3 screws as well as the gasket before removing the throttle position sensor with its 2 screws. Before installation begin by closing the throttle valve completely and then position the throttle position sensor into the throttle body and rotate it 45 degrees clockwise before torquing the sensor to 2.0 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 17 in.lbf). A new gasket should be installed on the throttle body while the ISC valve should be attached with 3 screws which need to be torqued to 3.4 N.m (35 kgf.cm, 30 in.lbf). The installation requires users to connect water by-pass hoses then install a new intake manifold gasket followed by securing the throttle body and accelerator control bracket with a bolt and 2 nuts torqued to 30 N.m (306 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf) before securing the wire harness clamp as well as the throttle position sensor connector for M/T transaxle and the ISC valve connector. Reconnect the hose and throttle position sensor connector after installing the transmission oil filler tube sub-assembly with fresh O-ring while torquing the tube to 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf) and oil cooler tube clamp to the same torque. Install the transmission oil level gauge sub-assembly first before you install and torque the accelerator control cable assembly to 13 N.m (133 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf). The last steps involve attaching the air cleaner case to its bracket while applying 7.8 N.m (80 kgf.cm, 69 in.lbf) torque to the 3 bolts which should be followed by securing the air cleaner inlet to the engine compartment using a bolt with 7.5 N.m (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf) torque. After this, add engine coolant then perform a leak inspection.
