2005 Scion xA Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the starter motor on 2005 Scion xA?
A: Start by disconnecting the lead wire then unwinding the two screws attaching the repair service starter kit to the starter housing before removing both the starter kit and return spring and plunger. Open the starter commutator end frame cover by using a screwdriver. The starter yoke assembly and commutator end frame assembly must be pulled together as an integrated unit after two through bolts are removed, then separate the starter yoke assembly before using snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring and plate washer to obtain the starter armature assembly. The starter armature plate should be detached from the starter yoke followed by the removal of the three planet gears. To inspect the starter center bearing clutch sub-assembly the technician removes both components from the starter drive housing after pulling out the drive lever set pin. You must use an ohmmeter to check if the commutator segments have electrical connection in the starter armature assembly; replace the armature when no continuity is detected. The armature should be replaced when the commutator shows ground continuity with the armature coil core. Use 400 grit sandpaper and consider using a lathe for cleaning the commutator surface initially before measuring its length with vernier calipers for armature replacement when the measurement exceeds 3.8 mm (0.150 in.). The brush length should be measured to determine whether replacement of the starter assembly is needed when the length falls below 9.0 mm (0.354 in.). Any brush continuity should be checked to decide if starter assembly repair or replacement is necessary. The gear teeth on the planetary gear and internal gear and starter clutch require wear and damage inspections. Damage parts must be replaced. Check the clutch pinion gear moves clockwise freely and locks counterclockwise as a proper operation sign. Replace the center bearing clutch sub-assembly when necessary. Verify that the plunger moves back briefly while conducting an open circuit test on the pull-in coil and holding coil and change the starter assembly in case of any detected failures. The starter center bearing clutch needs the drive lever set pin first before you place it within the starter drive housing. The installation procedure requires application of grease to all planetary shaft pin parts and planet gears before adding the three planetary components. The starter yoke assembly needs a properly aligned starter armature plate before adding grease to both the washer plate and armature shaft so you can install the armature shaft into the starter commutator end frame assembly. Use snap ring pliers to mount the plate washer and snap ring while conducting length checks on the snap ring through measurement until reaching 5.0 mm (0.197 in.). Mount the starter commutator end frame cover before putting on the starter yoke assembly while maintaining the correct alignment between the starter commutator rubber end frame. Mount the starter yoke assembly into the starter housing through its two through bolts while tightening it to 6.0 Nm (61 kgf.cm, 53 in.lbf). For the repair service starter kit's plunger and hook application of grease is required before hooking the plunger put to the drive lever and assembling both components. Attach the repair service starter kit using two screws while tightening them to 7.5 Nm (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf), and lastly secure the lead wire to the terminal through the nut which should be torqued to 10 Nm (102 kgf.cm, 7.4 ft.lbf).
