2006 Scion xA Starter Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2006 Scion xA?
A: The starter motor service and repair process starts by first disassembling its components through the following sequence: disconnect the lead wire from the magnet starter switch body followed by removing the nut, then unfasten the switch body by removing its two screws, then detach the return spring and plunger. A screwdriver should be used to remove the starter commutator end frame cover. The starter armature service requires removing the 2 through bolts followed by pulling the starter yoke and commutator end frame unit together before splitting them apart. This action prepares the starter armature for removal. Pull out the starter yoke and its 3 planet gears and then take away the starter armature plate. The starter center bearing clutch sub-assembly needs removal together with its drive lever set pin from the starter drive housing. Reassembly starts with inserting the drive lever set pin into the starter center bearing clutch followed by its placement within the starter drive housing. Use grease to lubricate both the 3 planet gears and planet shaft pins before adding them to their positions. The starter yoke receives the starter armature plate that should have its cutout matching the inside protrusion before installation. After applying grease to both the armature shaft and starter commutator end frame plate, first place the armature shaft onto its mounting position on the frames before adding the plate washer and securing the snap ring with snap ring pliers. Use snap ring pliers to measure the snap ring length which should not exceed 5.0 mm (0.197 in); if the measurement exceeds this limit replace the component. After putting on the starter commutator end frame cover attach the rubber to the cutout of the starter yoke before installing the yoke to the frame. Use through bolts to attach the starter yoke key to the starter housing keyway while torquing them to 6.0 N.m (61 kgf.cm, 53 in.lbf). Finishing operations begin with greasing the plunger parts before placing the plunger hook of the magnet switch body onto the drive lever. Installation of the plunger along with the return spring follows before tightening the 2 screws to 7.5 N.m (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf). Last, connect the lead wire to its terminal by torquing the nut to 10 N.m (102 kgf.cm, 7.4 ft.lbf).
