2004 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2004 Toyota Tundra?
A: Service and repair operations on the power steering pump require torque measurement of the PS vane pump while verifying smooth rotation besides normal noise along with a torque check through a wrench set to 0.28 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.) or under. First extract the reservoir oil while removing the three bolts together with its O-ring then proceed to remove the pressure port union and flow control valve and spring before extracting the O-ring from the pressure port union. Detach the bracket first by removing two bolts before you can remove the rear housing together with its two O-rings. First remove the wave washer followed by side plate as well as gasket and cam ring after which extract the 10 vane plates along with the vane pump rotor while being cautious about dropped parts. Separate the vane pump shaft together with its pulley and the two front housing straight pins. You must use a caliper gauge with a micrometer to check the vane pump shaft's bushing clearance followed by an inspection of oil clearance. The vane pump shaft and front housing need replacement if the standard clearance range of 0.03 - 0.05 mm (0.0012 - 0.0020 inch) and maximum clearance of 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch) is exceeded. Download a ruler to determine the 10 vane plates have respective dimensions of 8.6 mm (0.339 inch) minimum height and 1.397 mm (0.0550 inch) minimum thickness and 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch) minimum length. Measure rotor plate and groove clearance using a feeler gauge to replace either component when maximum distance reaches 0.033 mm (0.0013 inch). Inspect the flow control valve by first applying power steering fluid before testing successful valve hole entry followed by compressed air leakage checks using 392 - 490 kPa (4 - 5 kgf/cm2, 57 - 71 psi) pressure. If leakage occurs eliminate the valve by replacing it with A, B, C, D, E or F parts. The spring free length measurement with vernier calipers should be at least 33.2 mm (1.307 inch) and requires replacement if not met. A screwdriver with vinyl tape facilitates the removal of the oil seal while power steering fluid should be applied to a new oil seal before inserting it correctly using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00330), 09950-70010 (09951-07100). The reassembly procedure requires power steering fluid application to designated components before installing two fresh straight pins into the front housing by using a plastic hammer and finally placing the vane pump shaft together with its pulley. First install the rotor after positioning the cam ring with its inscribed mark facing the exterior and following it with the snap ring. Instal the 10 vane plates so their round ends point outward while using a new gasket on the front housing and aligning the side plate to the straight pins. Insert the wave washer into the side plate slots before applying power steering fluid to two new O-rings which should be installed into the rear housing followed by securing it with two bolts at 24 Nm (240 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Before tightening the pressure port union with 83 Nm torque (850 kgf-cm and 62 ft. lbs.), install the spring along with the flow control valve in the proper orientation and apply power steering fluid to the new O-ring which will later seal the pressure port union. The bracket installation requires torquing two bolts to 44 Nm which equals 440 kgf-cm or 32 ft. lbs. Next apply power steering fluid to a new O-ring which gets installed on the oil reservoir using three bolts tightened to specifications of 13 Nm for the front side and 24 Nm for the rear sides. Take another measurement of the PS vane pump rotating torque as the last step.
