2004 Toyota Solara Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Seal on 2004 Toyota Solara?
A: The replacement process for engine rear oil seals begins by isolating either automatic transaxle assembly (A/T) or manual transaxle assembly (M/T). This procedure must follow engine assembly removal together with its attached transaxle. The crankshaft requires Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to be fixed before removing the 8 bolts and rear spacer and drive plate and front spacer from A/T. The M/T requires users to remove three sub-assemblies including the clutch cover and both clutch disc and flywheel while employing the same Special Service Tool for crankshaft fixation before extracting these components through their 8 bolts and rear spacer and flywheel. A combination of knife-cutting on the oil seal lip followed by screwdriver prying will function properly when the screwdriver tip is taped. Use 400-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface of the crankshaft after damage inspection when necessary. The installation process requires MP grease on the new oil seal lip while excluding foreign debris followed by the use of Special Service Tool: 09223-15030, 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a hammer to tap in the oil seal until the rear oil seal retainer edge. Finally, wipe off all remaining grease from the crankshaft. The drive plate and ring gear sub-assembly installation requires mounting the crankshaft and cleaning the bolt and bolt hole before applying adhesive (Part No. 08833-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) to 2 or 3 bolt threads subsequently adding the front spacer, drive plate, and rear spacer through 8 bolts and equal torqueing to 98 Nm (1,000 kgf-cm, 72 ft. lbs.). Place the flywheel within its sub-assembly before applying cleaning then adhesive and installing with eight bolts while ensuring each bolt reaches 130 Nm torque (1,330 kgf-cm, 96 ft. lbs.). Reassemble the clutch disc assembly and clutch cover assembly together with the transaxle assembly which corresponds to the vehicle.
