2004 Toyota Sienna Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Overhaul a Rack and Pinion Power Steering Assembly on 2004 Toyota Sienna?
A: Obtaining an overhaul of the rack and pinion power steering rack and pinion assembly requires that technicians install the rack and pinion boot No.1 clamp using Special Service Tool: 09521-24010 and then duplicate the same installation steps on the opposing side. After obtaining pliers you should apply them to install both rack boot clips. First screw the lock nut along with the tie rod assembly onto the rack end sub-assembly until matchmarks perfectly align for both left and right tie rod assemblies. Torque the lock nut before you finish toe-in adjustment. Two fresh power steering fluid-coated O-rings should be fitted onto the left turn pressure tube. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-38200 to install it on the rack and pinion assembly with a torque setting at 11.5 Nm (117 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.) and a torque wrench with a 345 mm (13.58 inches) length that is oriented parallel to the tool. The same process should be performed to install the O-rings and pressure tube on the right turn path. Special Service Tool: 09023-12700 allows users to install return tube No.2 while torquing it to 22.5 Nm (229 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.) through the use of a torque wrench at 345 mm (13.58 inches) fulcrum length. Fasten the rack and pinion power steering rack and pinion assembly with two bolts along with nuts and torque them to levels of 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.). You must install the pressure feed tube assembly to the rack and pinion assembly and utilize the clip before attaching the return tube assembly while using Special Service Tool: 09023-12700 to reach 22.5 Nm (229 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.) torque with a torque wrench that has a 300 mm (11.81 inches) fulcrum length. The tube clamp requires a bolt and a nut which need torquing to 9.8 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 87 inch lbs.). The left and right sides of front stabilizer bracket No.1 require two bolts that need torquing to 17 Nm (173 kgf-cm, 12 ft. lbs.). The installation of both front stabilizer link assemblies must begin at this point. Install the bolt after setting the matchmarks between the steering intermediate shaft assembly and rack and pinion assembly and torque it to 36 Nm (367 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.). Then install the dust cover with the springs tightly secured. Another installation procedure must be applied on the left and right tie rod assemblies. The installation process ends by mounting front wheels with proper torque to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) followed by a check of front wheel and steering wheel center alignment and power steering fluid addition and bleeding process before inspecting for leaks.
