2004 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Transmission Speed Sensor on 2004 Toyota Sequoia?
A: The Transmission Speed Sensor service requires propeller shaft removal before removing the No. 1 vehicle speed sensor and speedometer driven gear and the No. 2 vehicle speed sensor. Secure the transmission against the transmission jack while slightly elevating it then eliminate the cross member through bolt removal from the 4 mounting bolts of the engine rear insulator and the front 4 bolts, nuts, washers, and crossmember itself. After separating the engine rear mounting insulator from the extension housing through bolt removal of its 4 bolts followed by extended housing and gasket removal through the loosening of the 6 mounting bolts users may choose to use a plastic hammer or wooden block to facilitate the removal process. First remove the speed meter drive gear by putting a snap ring expander on the ring then taking out the snap ring before pulling out the drive gear itself. Remove the sensor rotor along with its key through the use of a snap ring expander which serves to extract the snap ring. Installation begins by mounting the sensor rotor together with the key followed by the speed meter drive gear while using a snap ring expander for the snap ring. Installer must use Part No. 08833-00080, THREE BOND 1344, LOCTITE 242 or equivalent to apply sealant to the 6 bolt threads before inserting the extension housing with new gasket into the case and securing it with 6 bolts of 36 Nm (370 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.) torque while acknowledging that 2 lower bolts have shorter length. Use torques of 18 Nm (180 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) when installing the 4 bolts on the rear mounting side to the engine rear mounting insulator. Finish the repair by placing the No. 2 vehicle speed sensor alongside the speedometer driven gear and No. 1 vehicle speed sensor followed by the propeller shaft installation then fill the ATF before measuring the fluid volume.
