2004 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear control arm on 2004 Toyota RAV4?
A: The servicing process for the rear control arm starts with removing the rear wheel followed by applying 103 Nm torque (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). During 4WD repair work remove the rear drive shaft from the vehicle. The ABS speed sensor connector and wire need disconnecting for 2WD vehicles with a torque of 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) achieved by unscrewing two bolts. The rear drive shaft needs removal on 4WD vehicles. 2WD vehicles with ABS require ABS speed sensor and wire extraction through bolt removal using 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) torque. Similarly, connecting the speed sensor wire harness to the No. 1 suspension arm requires a torque of 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). The brake line from the No. 1 suspension arm needs removal of two torque-tightened 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) bolts before disconnecting the parking brake cable through its bolts. Separate the rear axle hub from its position while detaching the shock absorber followed by disconnecting the stabilizer bar as well as link from the lower suspension arm. Every side requires removal of its upper suspension arm by unbolting it from two points and unthreading two nuts under 113 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.) torque. Workers should mark both camber adjust cam and suspension member before disassembling the lower suspension arm by removing two bolts, two nuts and the camber adjust cam and lower suspension arm. The work should also include a torque application of 113 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.) for each side. Begin coil spring and rear No. 1 suspension arm removal with matchmarks on the toe-adjust cam and body followed by bolt loosening to take out the coil spring and upper insulator. Proper installation requires setting the lower end of the coil spring into the No. 1 suspension arm gap. When performing an installation of the bolt and toe-adjust cam alongside the 2 attachments and nut then lower suspension arm, use a torque of 132 Nm (1,350 kgf-cm, 98 ft. lbs.). After the suspension stabilizes, tighten the bolt before installation. The spring bumper will be removable after the bolt's removal which requires 13 Nm of torque. To replace the shock absorber lower pivot pin start by uninstalling two bolts and removing the lower pivot pin then install a new pivot pin by attaching the two bolts while torquing them to 30 Nm (310 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.). Special Service Tools 09649-17010 and 09710-30050 with a press will be utilized to replace the rear No. 1 suspension arm bushing. After proper insertion of the bushing onto the arm, the Special Service Tool 09710-30050 will be used to install it while minimizing contact with petroleum oils. The installation procedure should follow the reverse sequence of removal steps while post-installation tests should verify the ABS speed sensor signal together with rear wheel alignment checks.
