2004 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove the rear coil spring and replace the rear No. 1 suspension arm bushing on 2004 Toyota RAV4?
A: The first step to remove the rear coil spring begins with removing the rear wheel while maintaining a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). During 4WD vehicle servicing the rear drive shaft should be uninstalled first. 2WD vehicles with ABS require disconnecting the ABS speed sensor connector by unpluging the wire harness and removing both its connecting bolts with 19 Nm torque force (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). After using a torque wrench to remove the bolt which needs 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 in.-lbs. torque), follow by disconnecting the 2 bolts and wire harness of the speed sensor with 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 foot lbs.). Start by taking off the brake drum before disconnecting the brake line from the No. 1 suspension arm through the removal of 2 bolts with 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) torque. The parking brake cable should also be disconnected from the No. 1 suspension arm using a torque of 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Begin by removing the rear axle hub followed by disconnecting the shock absorber and unstabilizer bar and link from the bottom suspension arm. The procedure to remove both upper suspension arms includes removing each arm's 2 bolts and 2 nuts by torquing them to 113 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Repeat the same sequence on the other side. Remove the lower suspension arm together with its 2 bolts, 2 nuts, camber adjust cam and suspension member. Apply 113 Nm torque (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.) while operating on both sides. When removing the coil spring together with the rear No. 1 suspension arm it is necessary to mark the body and toe-adjust cam before loosening the bolt and lifting out both components while making sure that the coil spring's lower end enters the No. 1 suspension arm gap for reinstallation. A torque of 132 Nm (1,350 kgf-cm, 98 ft. lbs.) will be applied when you remove the bolt, toe-adjust cam, 2 attachments, nut, and lower suspension arm. Install the bolt after stabilizing the suspension during installation. The completion of spring bumper removal requires the bolt's removal with 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque. The shock absorber lower pivot pin replacement procedure requires removal of 2 bolts followed by a lower pivot pin before installing a new pivot pin with 2 bolts at 30 Nm torque setting (310 kgf-cm or 22 ft. lbs.). Use Special Service Tools 09649-17010 and 09710-30050 during which a press must remove the bushing before placing a new bushing on the No. 1 suspension arm and re-installing it with 09710-30050 and a press while ensuring the bushing stays free of grease or oil. Installation requires the reverse sequence of removal steps then verify the ABS speed sensor detection and rear wheel precision after completion.
