2005 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to remove and reassemble the front coil spring and shock absorber on 2005 Toyota RAV4?
A: Before beginning the process to remove the front coil spring first detach the front wheel using a 103 Nm torque measurement (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The stabilizer bar link disconnect process starts by removing the bolt and tightening it to 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) and if the ball joint moves with the nut then apply a 5 mm hexagon wrench to hold the stud. The flexible hose connecting the shock absorber requires a 18.5 Nm (190 kgf-cm,14 ft. lbs.) torque to disconnect. Vehicles with ABS will also need the disconnection of the ABS speed sensor wire. First begin with both shock absorber lower nuts then loosen them by using 143 Nm of torque while keeping the two bolts in place before you remove the suspension support nuts with their torque set at 80 Nm. To finish the replacement process, take out the shock absorber and coil spring by first removing its two bolts and two nuts located at the lower side. After shock absorber installation the technician must perform front wheel alignment testing. The shock absorber will go into a vise thanks to two nuts joined by a bolt allowing coil spring compression with Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) after wrapping the coil spring with protective vinyl tape. Use Special Service Tool: 09729-22031 to hold the spring upper seat before you remove the nut. Remove the suspension support together with the dust seal and spring upper seat, upper insulator, coil spring, spring bumper, and lower insulator from the shock absorber before taking the Special Service Tool off the coil spring. Use your hands to extend and compress the shock absorber rod and check for both normal resistance and regular sounding operation; replace if problems occur. To dispose of the shock absorber you must fully extend its rod then drill a hole in the cylinder while making sure to prevent any dangerous chip discharge and noting that its gas features no color or odor and non-poisonous composition. The shock absorber assembly requires installation of the lower insulator first and then the spring bumper to the piston rod followed by compressing the coil spring using Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) while properly wrapping vinyl tape around it. Place the coil spring on the shock absorber so its lower end rests between the lower spring seat gap and ensure the spring upper seat tab connects with the upper insulator tabs. You should install the spring upper seat with its upper insulator to the shock absorber while directing the 'OUT' mark toward the outside together with the dust seal and suspension support. A torque of 47 Nm (475 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.) should be applied to install the new nut using Special Service Tool: 09729-22031 while holding the spring upper seat during this process and the Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) must be removed afterward. Next, pack the suspension support with MP grease and install the cap.
