2004 Toyota RAV4 Shock Absorber Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the Shock Absorber on 2004 Toyota RAV4?
A: Start service of the suspension strut by removing the front wheel while tightening it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). After disconnecting the stabilizer bar link remove its bolt while using 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) torque and if the ball joint moves with the bolt secure it with a 5 mm hexagon wrench on the stud. The service procedure for shock absorber flexible hoses starts with unscrewing their bolt using a wrench set to 18.5 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) torque. The correct procedure for shock absorber installation involves removing a bolt which disconnects both the flexible hose and the ABS speed sensor wire from vehicles with ABS installations at specified torques of 18.5 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Unscrew the two nuts which fasten the shock absorber coil spring at 143 Nm (1,460 kgf-cm, 105 ft. lbs.) torque from the lower side of the shock absorber but maintain the two bolts in place. Begin by removing three suspension support nuts with a torque of 80 Nm (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) followed by taking out the two bolts and two nuts situated at the lower shock absorber with a note to apply engine oil on the nut threads during installation. Reconstruction of the system starts with a reverse installation sequence and you need to inspect the front wheel alignment when everything is put back together.
