2005 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service a shock absorber on 2005 Toyota RAV4?
A: The needed process to service a shock absorber begins with removing the rear wheel while tightening it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Proceed by removing the shock absorber after removing its suspension cap and succeeding with the 2 nuts and 2 retainers and cushion that requires 14.5 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) torque. Support the No. 1 suspension arm with a jack using a wooden or rubber block between them while unplugging the bolt and the 2 retainers then the cushion and shock absorber with a torque of 37 Nm (380 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.) to finish removing the bushing. Inspect the shock absorber through rod compression and extension to detect abnormal resistance or unexpected sounds; a replacement needs to be installed if such anomalies occur. Prior to discarding the shock absorber extend the rod fully before drilling a hole in the middle of the cylinder at which point the gas needs to be released carefully to prevent flying chips since the gas is both odorless and non-poisonous and colorless. Installation requires the reverse steps of the removal procedure.
