2004 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Replace a Speed Sensor in a Skid Control System on 2004 Toyota Matrix?
A: Begin replacement of the skid control sensor by detaching the rear wheel and then taking off the drum sub-assembly (drum rear brake type) or caliper assembly LH (disc rear brake type), disc brake caliper, and disc (disc rear brake type). Locate the skid control sensor wire then remove the electric plug from its connection. Insert the rear axle hub into a soft jaw vise then disassemble the sensor part. A replacement axle hub assembly is essential when the part hits the ground after receiving a substantial hit. Use a pin punch and hammer to loosen the two pins. Take out the 2 attachments by installing Special Service Tools: 09520-00031 (09520-00040), 09521-00020, 09950-00020, and 2 bolts of 12mm diameter and 1.5mm pitch. If damage affects the sensor rotor owners need to replace the entire axle hub assembly while ensuring the axle hub and speed sensor surfaces remain unscratched. Before assembly clean both the sensor attachment area of the axle hub and the new speed sensor handle them gently to avoid damaging sensitive parts. Set the speed sensor interactively on the axle hub with its connector down toward the ground. Use 09214-76011 Special Service Tool and a press to install the new speed sensor into position. Remount the left bearing and rear axle hub assembly followed by reconnecting the skid sensor wire. Mount the brake rear assembly and its elements including the brake drum (drum brake type), brake disc (disc brake type), and disc brake caliper assembly LH (disc brake type). Finish by installing the rear wheel at 103 Nm torque and checking the alignment plus ABS speed sensor signals.
