Start servicing the rear wheel speed sensor by taking out the wheel then disconnecting the speed sensor connection. To access the speed sensor you need to start by taking away the two pins holding it to the rear axle hub using a pin punch and hammer with Special Service Tool 09520-00031. Subsequently fasten the rear axle hub onto a soft jaw vise and make sure to replace the hub if you drop it or experience sudden impact. Use Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020), 09950-00020 along with 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, Pitch: 1.5 mm) to take out the speed sensor unit. Perform these actions gently to prevent damage to both parts. To replace the speed sensor wire harness you need to remove the seat cushion and seatback with quarter trim then disconnect wire harness connector at the body before removing two clamping bolts. Install new sensor wire harness under specified torque settings of 19 Nm (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft.lbs.) on lower arm side and 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) on body side. Clean the sensor surface areas of both the axle hub and new unit before placing the speed sensor onto the axle hub with connector downward. Use 09214-76011 special service tool and a press to mount the new sensor into position gradually to prevent damage. Reinstall the rear wheel using 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque before checking the speed sensor signal after connecting it to the speed sensor.

Service or repairs of the rear wheel speed sensor begin with removing the rear wheel and disconnecting the speed sensor connector. Start by uninstalling the speed sensor that is mounted with the rear axle hub followed by unmounting the ABS speed sensor by extracting its two pins with a pin punch and hammer while separating the two attachments using Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020). Before restoring the axle hub assembly into a soft jaw vise take precautionary measures by either replacing it if it meets a strong shock or if it drops. In order to remove the ABS speed sensor you need Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020), 09950-00020 and 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, Pitch: 1.5 mm) while avoiding debris on the sensor rotor and extracting it in a straight line for protection. Relevant damage to the sensor rotor will require new axle hub assembly installation while maintaining separation between the axle hub and speed sensor contact areas. Begin installation after cleaning both the contacting axle hub surface and new ABS speed sensor while inspecting that no foreign material exists on the sensor rotor. To install the ABS speed sensor on the axle hub connect it with the connector facing down then use Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 and a press in a straight motion at slow speed without hammering it. Finally install the speed sensor then reconnect its connector before torquing the rear wheel to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) while verifying the speed sensor signal.

Start by taking off the wheel from the rear then split the disc brake caliper (disc brake type) before you remove either the disc or brake drum (drum brake type). Unplug the skid control sensor electrical wire by taking off its connector. Insert the LUH rear axle hub into a soft jaw vise without damaging the parts and replace the axle hub assembly if you drop it or subject it to hard force. Strike in the pins with a pin punch and hammer while using Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040); 09521-00020; 09950-00020; and 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm; pitch: 1.5 mm) to extract the two attachments then remove the skid control sensor from the rear axle hub. The entire axle hub assembly must be replaced if the speed sensor rotor gets damaged while assembly workers need to avoid scratching the sensor-touching parts. Clean both surfaces of the axle hub and new sensor thoroughly before placing the sensor rotor into position. Place the speed sensor onto the axle hub using the lowest possible position under on-vehicle conditions and use Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 to install the new speed sensor through a press. Reinstall the rear axle hub and Bearing unit Left then connect Skid Control sensor cable and add rear brakes (Disc version: Disc Brake Assembly or Brake Caliper Left and Brake Parts Drum version). Replace the wheel and secure it with the proper torque of 103 Nm. Align the rear wheels and test the ABS speed sensor performance.

Installation of the U340E automatic transaxle speed sensor begins by using Toyota Genuine ATF WS or equivalent to coat a new O-ring before installing it onto the speedometer sensor for final placement of the driven gear inside with its clip device. Use a bolt to fasten the speedometer sensor while torquing it to 7.0 Nm (71 kgf-cm, 62 in-lbf), then attach the speedometer sensor connector. After installing the battery tray follow with the battery carrier and battery. The installation process of the hatchback includes the cowl top outer panel and cowl register duct subassembly coupled with the front wiper motor with its link and the LH cowl top ventilator louver as well as the hood to cowl top seal and LH front wiper arm and blade assembly. The sedan requires installation of the outer cowl top panel together with front air shutter seal and cowl side ventilator sub-assembly LH and RH before front wiper arm and blade assembly RH installation. The last step involves placing the front wiper arm head cap on both hatchback and sedan vehicles.

Reinstall the battery.

Remove the speed sensor from the axle carrier, applying a torque of 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.).

Remove the battery, ECM, and ECM case, followed by the ECM bracket.

Disconnect the speed sensor connector by removing the seat cushion and seatback, followed by the lower center garnish, rear door scuff plate, and room partition trim.

Care should be taken not to scratch the contacting surface of the axle hub and speed sensor.

Secure the speedometer sensor assembly with the bolt, ensuring a torque of 11 Nm (115 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.).

First, remove the rear wheel and disconnect the speed sensor connector.

Remove the speed sensor from the axle carrier, applying the same torque specification of 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.).

Remove the battery, ECM, and ECM case, followed by the ECM bracket.

Apply a torque of 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) for the harness clamp to the body.

Disconnect the counter gear speed sensor connector and remove it by taking out the bolt and O-ring.

Utilize Special Service Tool: 09520-00031 (09520-00040, 09521-00020), 09950-00020, and 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, Pitch: 1.5 mm).

Install the ECM and ECM case with a torque of 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.).

Take out the bolt, then the clip and speedometer driven gear, and finally the O-ring from the sensor.

Mount the axle hub assembly in a soft jaw vise, ensuring to replace it if dropped or subjected to a strong shock.

Remove the air cleaner assembly and the air cleaner assembly bracket by taking out the 2 bolts and the bracket along with the shift control cable clamp.

Connect the speed sensor connector and the speed sensor wire harness clamp to the body.

Install the speed sensor front using the 2 bolts, with Bolt A torqued to 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) and Bolt B to 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.).

Disengage the wire harness clamp from the body, disconnect the speed sensor connector, and remove the two clamp bolts that secure the sensor harness to the body and shock absorber, followed by the bolt and the speed sensor itself.

Install the rear brake drum sub-assembly for both TMMC and TMC made drum types.

Remove the two clamp bolts securing the sensor harness to the body and shock absorber, followed by the bolt and the speed sensor itself, ensuring the sensor tip remains clean throughout the process.

It must be replaced.

Use a pin punch and hammer along with Special Service Tools: 09520-00031, 09520-00040, 09521-00020, 09950-00020, and 2 bolts (Diameter: 12 mm, pitch: 1.5 mm).

Disconnect the speed sensor connector.

Check for foreign objects on the speed sensor detection portion while pressing it in straight and slowly.

Take out the 6 resin clips that secure the sensor wire harness to the frame, upper control arm, and axle housing.

Remove the mounting bolt and the speed sensor, applying a torque of 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.).

Remove the mounting bolt and the speed sensor, applying a torque of 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.) during removal.

Attach the front speed sensor to the steering knuckle with the bolt, applying a torque of 8.0 N.m (82 kgf.cm, 71 in.lbf), ensuring the sensor tip and installation hole remain clear of debris.

Ensure a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf).

Insert the speedometer driven gear into the speedometer sensor with the clip, coat a new O-ring with ATF, install it to the driven gear assembly, and secure the sensor with the bolt, torquing it to 16 N*m (160 kgf*cm, 12 ft.*lbf) before reconnecting the sensor connector.

Reverse the removal steps and check the speed sensor signal after completing the installation.

Follow the reverse order of removal and check the speed sensor signal after completing the installation.

Install the sensor harness clamp using bolts "A" and "B," torquing Bolt A to 8.0 N.m (82 kgf.cm, 71 in.lbf) and Bolt B to 29 N.m (296 kgf.cm, 21 ft.lbf).

Follow the same procedure as the NC SENSOR, coating an O-ring with ATF, installing it with the bolt, and torquing it to 11.3 Nm (115 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.) before connecting its connector.

Use 3 screws, 6 clips, and 4 grommets for installation, ensuring the speed sensor wire does not protrude beyond the liner.

Install the 3 clips, connect the speed sensor connector, and attach the speed sensor clip to the body.

Secure the clamp onto the shock absorber with a bolt at a torque of 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft-lbf), then install the clamp onto the body with another bolt at 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 in-lbf).

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
