2004 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the front shock absorber on 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The first task for servicing a front shock absorber is to remove the front wheel after securing it with 131 Nm (1,340 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.) torque. Begin by removing the front fender apron followed by the shock absorber which requires disconnecting from the lower suspension arm after unfastening the bolt and nut and tightening to 135 Nm (1,400 kgf-cm, 100 ft. lbs.). Remove the nut combined with the cushion along with retainer and shock absorber by applying torque at 68 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 50 ft. lbs.). Then take off the cushion and retainer from the shock absorber. Check the shock absorber by operating the rod through compression and extension steps to verify normal resistance along with typical sounds; any unusual findings require you to switch to a new device. The shock absorber preparation requires drilling a ventilation hole of 2 - 3 mm diameter (0.079 - 0.118 inch) to release the internal gas but you need to exercise caution because drill chips may escape during this process. The gas inside the absorber has no color, odor or toxic properties. The process of installation follows the exact opposite steps of removing the shock absorber system.
