2004 Toyota Land Cruiser Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the steering knuckle on 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Owners must first detach the front axle hub before removing the oil seal, gasket along with the dust cover by uninstalling the 4 bolts securing them. Unplug the ABS speed sensor as well as remove the wire harness using 3 bolts. The tie rod end should be disconnected from the steering knuckle arm through the removal of the nut and cotter pin followed by the utilization of Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. For both connections the Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 should be used to detach the lower suspension arm from the steering knuckle after removing the cotter pin and nut. Remove the steering knuckle through this step sequence: Separate the lower suspension arm and upper suspension arm with Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 while maintaining the temporary connection of the lower suspension arm nut and then detach the nut and steering knuckle from its position. Installation begins with synthetic oil and lithium soap base chassis grease, NLGI No. 1 application to the drive shaft followed by jacking the lower suspension arm and connecting the steering knuckle without damaging the oil seal. The lower suspension arm needs to have its temporary nut attached before using a jack to lift the arm while the installer connects the steering knuckle to the upper suspension arm at 110 Nm (1,125 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.). Replace the new cotter pin and adjust the nut if hole alignment is off by extending it up to 60 degrees. Torque the nut of the lower suspension arm to 159 Nm (1,625 kgf-cm, 117 ft. lbs.) and complete the installation process by installing a new cotter pin. The connection between the tie rod end and steering knuckle requires a nut with torque application at 122 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 91 ft. lbs.). Completing the installation by adding a new cotter pin while adjusting the nut if required. Secure the 3 ABS speed sensor bolts with a torque of 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.), 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.), and 28 Nm (290 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.) accordingly. Insert the front axle hub after setting torque to 18 Nm (185 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.) on the 4 bolts that will secure the dust cover and oil seal with preinstalled gasket.
