2004 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the drive shaft on 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Starting the repair procedures for the drive/propeller shaft requires removal of engine No. 2 under cover followed by front propeller shaft removal. Place matchmarks on the propeller shaft flange and transfer. Afterward remove the 4 nuts and washers while torquing them to 80 Nm. After marking the propeller shaft flange and front differential for alignment, remove the four nuts, bolts along with washers by torquing at 80 Nm (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) and then remove the front propeller shaft. The process for the rear propeller shaft starts with marking the propeller shaft flange against the transfer piece then removing its 4 nuts and washers at 106 Nm (1,080 kgf-cm, 78 ft. lbs.), before marking the propeller shaft flange against the rear differential and removing its 4 nuts, bolts, and washers at identical torque. Check the maximum tolerance of shaft runout for both front and rear propeller shafts with a dial indicator; replace all shafts exhibiting runout exceeding 0.8 mm (0.031 inch). Measure the spider bearing's condition for breakage along with testing its axial motion by turning a tight-grasped shaft to verify no more than 0 mm (0 inch) possible movement. Replace the spider bearing at any sign of damage. The procedure for replacement begins by taking out the sleeve yoke from the propeller shaft after making position marks and then drawing it from its placement. Cut the pressing-in section of the dust cover spirally and extract it using a chisel and hammer to replace the propeller shaft when damaged. The process requires Special Service Tool: 09636-20010 to press in the new dust cover while maintaining a straight universal joint position and applying IMP grease to the "A" section. Insert the sleeve yoke into the propeller shaft by first lubricating both the spline and sliding surface with MP grease then by aligning the matchmarks before placing the shaft within the yoke. After completion of installation proceed with the reverse order of removal steps while applying MP grease through a grease gun until the oil seal receives sufficient distribution of grease.
