2004 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear Differential Seal on 2004 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The repair of the rear differential front oil seal begins with disconnecting the rear propeller shaft through matchmarking the companion flange and propeller shaft followed by removing all 4 nuts, bolts, and washers to release the propeller shaft while providing secure support to the disconnected propeller shaft. Drain all hypoid gear oil from the differential before using Special Service Tool: 09330-00021 to hold the companion flange while unstaking the nut with a chisel and hammer. Remove the companion flange by using Special Service Tool: 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03030, 09956-03040). The technician first uses Special Service Tool: 09308-10010 to extract the oil seal together with the oil slinger and then proceeds to remove the front bearing with Helpmate Special Service Tool: 09556-22010. Use Special Service Tool: 09308-00010 to remove the bearing outer race while protecting the taper surface then eliminate the bearing spacer. Install a new bearing spacer and proceed with the installation of the bearing outer race through the use of Special Service Tool: 09316-60011 (09316-00011, 09316-00021) and a hammer. All installation work should begin with inserting the front bearing followed by the oil slinger. The process requires hypoid gear oil application to the new oil seal periphery before installation with Special Service Tool: 09214-76011 and a hammer to achieve a 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) oil seal drive in depth. The lip of this oil seal needs proper coating with MP grease. A new companion flange nut requires gear oil coating on its threads before torquing it to 245 Nm using Special Service Tool: 09950-30012 (09951-03010, 09953-03010, 09954-03010, 09955-03030, 09956-03040). The repair process includes readjusting drive pinion preload followed by stake implementation on the drive pinion nut and realignment of matchmarks before installing the four bolts with washers and nuts to a torque specification of 106 Nm (1,080 kgf-cm, 78 ft. lbs.). Before closing the differential fill with hypoid gear oil while maintaining an applied torque force of 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). The proper differential oil choice is hypoid gear oil API GL-5 without LSD or hypoid gear oil LSD API GL-5 with LSD which requires SAE 90 above -18 degrees Celsius (0 degrees Fahrenheit) and SAE 80W-90 or 80W below -18 degrees Celsius (0 degrees Fahrenheit). The differential contains 3.20 liters (3.38 US qts., 2.82 Imp. qts.) when equipped with a lock feature while standard models hold 3.30 liters (3.49 US qts., 2.90 Imp. qts.).
